Golden Eagles Make Late Third Period Push, But Fall to Lumberjacks on Sunday

12/5/2021 4:42:00 PM

Crookston, Minn. – Minnesota Crookston was looking for their first sweep of the season on Saturday afternoon as they looked to defeat Dakota College at Bottineau for the second straight day.

There might have been a blizzard outside, but the Lumberjacks brought their own flurry in the first period, en route to three first period goals, which was enough to defeat the Golden Eagles, 5-3.

Much like they did last night, the Jacks were able to get on the board first with an early goal from Eric Hildebrand on the power play.

Less than a minute and a half later, DCB would score again off the stick of Ian Amsbaugh to put the Lumberjacks up 2-0.

JJ Adams would cap off an outstanding first period for the Jacks, scoring an even strength goal at the 12:27 mark of the first period to put the Lumberjacks up 3-0. That would be the score heading into the first intermission.

The Lumberjacks would score the next two goals; once in the second period and another one early on in the third period to put them up 5-0.

The Golden Eagles wouldn't go away. Gunner Ferrier (So., D, Baudette, Minn.) would find the puck in the slot and put it past Matt Trulsen to give the Golden Eagles some life.

Nikolai Rajala (Fr., F, Coleraine, Minn.) would score less than five minutes later in 4x4 play to cut the Lumberjacks lead to just three at 5-2.

Tristan Morneault (So., F, Dieppe, New Brunswick) would make the game even more interesting finding a rebound and putting the puck in the back of the net to make it 5-3, with 1:50 remaining in the game. Jackson Fuller (Fr., F, Bloomington, Minn.) would earn the assist.

The Golden Eagles would make a late push after pulling goaltender Jake Sumner (So., G, Alta Loma, Calif.), but Trulsen would make some big saves down the stretch to preserve the 5-3 victory for Dakota College.

Although Braden Schmitz (Fr., G, Devils Lake, N.D.) picked up the loss, he made 37 saves on 41 shots in the first two periods. Sumner came in for the third period and made 18 saves in 20 minutes.

Casey Kallock picked up two points on two assists in the game, which led the Golden Eagles. Rajala's goal gave him his team-leading 19th point on the season.

The Golden Eagles were 0-3 on the power play this afternoon.

The Golden Eagles fall to 5-5-2 on the season and will head on the road next weekend as they take on Williston State College for a pair of games on Saturday-Sunday. Puck drop on Saturday is set for 7 P.M., from Williston.
