CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston women's soccer team scored their first goal since September 24 but ultimately fell 4-1 to Southwest Minnesota State University Saturday, October 24. The Golden Eagles tested the Mustangs mid-way through the second half and looked for the equalizer, but the Mustangs scored two goals in the final 15 minutes to win 4-1.
UMN Crookston drops to 1-14-0 (1-11-0 NSIC) with Sunday's result. Southwest Minnesota State improved to 4-9-1 (3-8-1 NSIC) with the victory.
The Golden Eagles were led by
Morgan Laplante (Jr., MF/F, Desoto, Kan.) with her team-leading second goal of the season.
Jacqueline Calderon (So., MF, Indio, Calif.) picked up her second assist of the season, while
Abby Fettinger (Fr., MF/F, White Bear Lake, Minn.) picked up her first assist. Laplante had two shots on goal, while
Madelyn Teplansky (So., MF/F, Apple Valley, Calif.) had three shots on the game.
In goal,
Emma Stempien (Fr., GK, Plymouth, Mich.) made her first career start and allowed four goals and made 10 saves, including several crucial saves.
Southwest Minnesota State looked to goals from Jessica Jugovich, Alex Lotts, Emily Maciel, and Kylee Bennett. Lotts had five shots, including three shots on goal. Abbey Hoisington finished with five shots. In net, Julianne Arballo allowed one goal and had three saves.
Minnesota Crookston held the Mustangs scoreless for the first 35 minutes, but Maciel's goal in the 36
th minute broke the 0-0 tie.
The Golden Eagles had scoring opportunities early in the second stanza, however SMSU broke through with a Jugovich goal off a Lotts assist.
Minnesota Crookston trimmed the deficit to 2-1 in the 60
th minute. Laplante put the tally away off a Fettinger shot and saved played off a corner kick from Calderon.
The Mustangs extended their lead to 3-0 off a goal from Bennett in the 77
th minute. They added a final goal on a Lotts tally in the final minute of the game.
Minnesota Crookston remains at home to play Minot State University Friday, October 29 at 3 p.m. at UMN Crookston Soccer Field.
