Crookston, Minn. – Minnesota Crookston was looking for a weekend NSIC split as they hosted the Wolves of Northern State University on Saturday Afternoon.
The Wolves would use big runs in every set to sweep the Golden Eagles (12-25, 13-25, 15-25) and improve to 12-7 (7-4 NSIC), while the Golden Eagles fall to 1-15 (0-11 NSIC).
First Set
Sally Gaul would get the Wolves on the board with a pair of kills, but
Lauren Wallace (R-Sr., OH, Bloomington, Minn.) would answer back with a kill of her own to make it 2-1.
A
Bailey Schaefer (Fr., OH, Brandon, Minn.) kill would get the Golden Eagles within two at 8-6.
Northern State would stretch their lead to 14-7, but another Wallace kill following a Golden Eagle timeout made it 14-8.
NSU would eventually extend their lead to 21-10 and that would be all they needed to win the set, 25-12.
Second Set
The Golden Eagles would get off to an excellent start, using a Wallace kill, a
Natalie Koke (R-Jr., S, Caledonia, Wis.) service ace and a setting error on the Wolves to make it 3-0.
The Wolves would eventually knot things up at four, but a
Mara Weisensel (So., MH, New Ulm, Minn.) kill regained the lead for the maroon and gold.
The maroon and gold would eventually take a 9-6 lead, but NSU would go on a 6-0 run to take a 12-9 lead.
When in doubt, go to the redshirt senior and that's what the Golden Eagles did as
Lauren Wallace collected a kill to make it 12-10.
NSU would score 10 out of the set's final 12 points to win the middle set, 25-13.
Third Set
The two teams would trade punches through the first four points, but the Wolves would try and take control of the set, scoring four points in a row.
Minnesota Crookston would score the next two to make it 6-4.
The Golden Eagles would eventually cut the deficit to 12-9, but a big 4-0 run for the Wolves would give them a 16-9 lead, forcing a
Sarah Morgan timeout.
That lead would be all they needed, as they would win the set 25-15 and the match, three sets to none.
Individual Stats
For the second straight match, Weisensel led the way in the match with nine kills, while Schaefer collected eight kills in the match.
Madison Klimek (So., DS, Oakdale, Minn.) had eight digs in the match, while Koke and Wallace collected seven and six digs, respectively.
For the Wolves, they were led by Sally Gaul and Natalie Szybinska, who each accounted for 11 kills in the match. Havyn Heinz had eight digs in the match, while four Wolves collected six digs.
