Minnesota Crookston Falls to Concordia-St. Paul

2/8/2020 5:13:00 PM

Box Score St. Paul, Minn.—Minnesota Crookston was looking to get back in the win column on Saturday afternoon, as they were in Minnesota's capital to do battle with the Golden Bears of Concordia-St. Paul.

Concordia-St. Paul used stifling defense and balanced offense to defeat the Golden Eagles, 72-59. With the win, the Golden bears improve to 12-12 (9-9 NSIC), while the Golden Eagles fall to 4-18 overall (3-15 NSIC).

The first quarter would see both teams struggle to put the ball in the basket. Mary Burke (R-Fr., G, Corcoran, Minn.) would score the first basket for the Golden Eagles on a nice drive and finish.

The Golden Eagles would struggle to score after that basket, but would score four straight times to end the half, including a pretty drive and finish from Emma Carpenter (Fr., G, Eagan, Minn.). Carpenter was fouled on the play and would make the free throw.

The Golden Eagles would score the first point of the second quarter, after Bren Fox (So., C, Norwood Young America, Minn.) went 1-2 from the free throw line.

The Golden Bears would score six in a row, to go up 22-12, but Abby Guidinger (Jr., F, Waukesha, Wis.) put a halt to that run with a long two.

The Golden Eagles would get as close as seven, but the Golden Bears, led by Sydney Schultz' 11 and Jadyn Hanson's 9 first half points, headed into the halftime break with a 35-23 lead.

The Golden Eagles saw seven players each register a point in that first half, led by Post's five, followed by Alyssa Peterson (Fr., G, Menahga, Minn.) and Amber Schoenicke (Sr., F/C, Marshall, Wis.), who each had four first half points.

The Golden Eagles shot just 34.5 percent from the field, compared to the Golden Bears 44.5 percent from the field in the first half.

CSP would come out scorching hot in the second half, scoring nine of the first 11 points to start the second half, to extend on their largest lead of game and make it a 19 point games early on in the second half.

The Golden Bears continued to play outstanding defense and balanced offense, to take a 50-27 lead at the first media timeout of the third quarter. The Golden Bears would take a 62-36 lead ending into the third quarter.

The Golden Eagles would start to shoot the ball better, as Burke, Carpenter and Ashley Freund (Jr., G, Jordan, Minn.) would each make a 3-point shot.

Minnesota Crookston would cut the lead to 18, following a pair of Mattea Vetsch (Fr., G, Devils Lake, N.D.) free throws.

The Golden Eagles continued to chip away at the CSP lead, but could never get as close as 13, as the Golden Bears won their second in a row, 72-59.

Despite shooting 7-14 from the field in the fourth quarter, the Golden Eagles shot just 33.9 percent from the field and were just 5-19 from behind the arc, all of which came in the final stanza.

Minnesota Crookston had no scorers in double-figures, but were led by Peterson's nine and Carpenter and Julia Peplinski (So., F, Hustisford, Wis.), who each had eight points.

Minnesota Crookston is back on the road next weekend, as they take their first trip out west to North Dakota. Minnesota Crookston and Minot State is set to tip-off at 5:30 next Friday night from the Minot Dome.
