Box Score 2 OWATONNA, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston women's tennis team fell 7-0 to Southwest Minnesota State Sun., Feb. 23, and they were defeated 7-0 by Minnesota State University Sat., Feb. 22 at West Hills Tennis Center in Owatonna, Minn.
The Golden Eagles had some of their best performances of the 2020 season against Southwest Minnesota State University. In doubles, the No. 1 duo of
Latafale Niumeitolu (Fr., Sandy, Utah) and
Ashley Smith (Sr., Staples, Minn.) took two games off Cora Delich and Paige Janka, but ultimately fell 6-2. At the No. 2 slot,
Ashley Chomyn (Fr., Winnipeg, Manitoba) and
Karli Renney (Jr., Detroit Lakes, Minn.) were defeated 6-0 by Taylor Bonestroo and Cara Berkner.
In singles, Renney played a great match as she took the second set 6-4 over Rachel Steffen at the No. 4 singles spot, but ultimately fell 6-0, 4-6, 1-0. At the No. 5 slot,
Samantha Hartung (Jr., Albany, Minn.) took two games from Bonestroo, but she was defeated 6-1, 6-1. At the No. 1 spot, Smith took a game off Delich in the first set, but fell 6-1, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, Niumeitolu picked up a game at the No. 2 spot, but she was upended 6-0, 6-1. At the No. 3 spot, Chomyn picked up a game against Hanna Himmelman, but fell 6-1, 6-0.
Against the Mavericks, Nieumeitolu and Smith played a strong match as they earned two games versus Tyanna Washa and Monika Ryan, but they ultimately fell 6-2. At the No. 2 spot, Dee Dookken and Lauren Goth of Minnesota State upended Renney and Hartung, 6-0.
In singles, Renney earned a win in a game against Goth, but ultimately fell 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4 singles. Hartung picked up a game in the second set at No. 5 singles, but fell 6-0, 6-1 to Kjerstin Hall. At No. 1 singles, Ryan defeated Smith, 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 2 spot, Niumeitolu fell 6-0, 6-0 to Dokken. At the No. 3 spot, Chomyn was defeated 6-0, 6-0 by Washa.
Minnesota Crookston returns to action Fri., Feb. 28 and Sat., Feb. 29 with a pair of home matches at Choice Health and Fitness in Grand Forks, N.D>, against Winona State University and Upper Iowa University.
