Minnesota Crookston Women's Basketball Opens 2020 Against Huskies and Bulldogs

1/2/2020 8:04:00 PM

CROOKSTON, Minn. - The Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team comes into the new year with a 2-8 (1-5 NSIC) mark. The Golden Eagles are looking for a fresh slate in 2020, as they look to move forward from a tough start in their 2019 portion of their schedule. Minnesota Crookston has a lot to look forward to though, as they have a very young roster with 10 players who are either freshmen or sophomores. The Golden Eagles played two of their best games in their last three tilts, as they earned a 66-65 win Dec. 14 over Wayne State College, and put up a strong effort versus Augustana University in a 63-54 loss to the perennial NSIC South power.
• DEAR ABBY. Minnesota Crookston junior Abby Guidinger has become Minnesota Crookston's go-to scoring option as evidenced by her 16.3 points per game in the last three tilts for Minnesota Crookston. Guidinger notched 20 points in the Dec. 14 win over Wayne State, going 9-of-15 from the field. Guidinger also can be a great facilitator from the high post and breakdown defenses, as she showed with four assists against Augustana. Guidinger has notched three assists per game for Minnesota Crookston in the last three games. She comes into Friday notching 9.0 points per game and shooting 45.2 percent from the field and 36.8 percent from beyond the arc.

• GIVE ME SOME PEP. Okay, okay, she might not be hitting eight threes a week, but to play off the classic Beatles song "Eight Day's A Week", Weakley has been a strong threat from beyond the arc throughout her career. She is coming off nine points in the win over Wayne State, including going 2-of-6 from beyond the arc. Weakley has moved her average scoring to 4.1 points per game. Last Saturday's performance was her best of the season. On Friday, she tallied six points on 2-of-4 from behind the three-point line. Weakley is also trending upward as she is notching 6.3 points per game in the last four for Minnesota Crookston. Weakley is 6-of-15 for 40.0 percent from beyond the arc during that stretch.

• FOX IN THE BOX. Bren Fox continues to develop as a post player for Coach Mike Roysland and the Golden Eagles. She is coming off eight points and eight rebounds in 18 minutes against Bemidji State. Fox comes into the weekend averaging 8.4 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. She is looking to get back to her early season form as she had 23 points and eight rebounds in the first game of the season against Nebraska Kearney. Fox has the potential to be a big scoring threat and is also strong on the class. She has had three games with double-figure points and seven games with eight or more rebounds on the season.

• SOMETHING ABOUT MARY. Redshirt Freshman Mary Burke is in her first full season playing for the Golden Eagles and she has a bright future ahead of her. Burke had nine points and three boards in the win over Wayne State Dec. 14. She had a season-high 13 points in the first game of the season against Nebraska Kearney. Burke had six rebounds off the bench in
Minnesota Crookston's last game against Bemidji State. She has notched 5.7 points and 3.1 rebounds per game on the 2019-20 season.

• POST GAME.  She might not be a post player, but Kylie Post continues to make a major impact on the game for the Golden Eagles. The sophomore from Corcoran, Minn., is averaging 6.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game on the 2019-20 season. Post has secured 10 or more points in two games this season, including 14 points in a win over Chaminade. Post had a season-high six rebounds versus Augustana and handed out four assists versus Chaminade. She is both a facilitator and a player that possesses the ability to get to the rim and score. Post will look to continue to grow as a player moving forward for Minnesota Crookston.

• FRESHMEN.  Minnesota Crookston has moved to starting a pair of freshmen this season, as Mattea Vetsch and Alyssa Peterson have both moved into the starting line-up recently. Vetsch, a native of Devils Lake, N.D., has started seven games on the season, while Peterson has started five games for the Golden Eagles. Vetsch is great on the defensive end, and has shown off her ability to shoot the ball, including a season-high 17 points against Northern State. Vetsch was an impressive 5-of-7 from beyond the arc at Wachs Arena. Peterson also is a strong shooter for Minnesota Crookston. She had a season-high 15 points on the road at Minnesota State University Moorhead with 15 points, including 3-of-8 from behind the three-point line. Both Peterson and Vetsch will be key players for Coach Mike Roysland's squad moving forward.

• FINDING THE THREE BALL.  Minnesota Crookston has continued to try to find their three-point shot this season. The Golden Eagles are currently shooting 27.6 percent from beyond the arc this season, while their opponents are hitting at a 38.5 percent clip. Minnesota Crookston's best three-point shooting night came against Northern State on Dec. 7, as they went 14-of-30 for 46.7 percent. The Golden Eagles were 6-of-17 for 35.3 percent from deep in a win over Wayne State. They have eclipsed 35.0 percent four times this season with two wins coming while shooting well from beyond the arc.

• AGAINST THE HUSKIES.  Minnesota Crookston has lost their last four meetings against the Huskies. They are 5-9 against St. Cloud State since 2010. The last win for the Golden Eagles came Jan. 7, 2017 in Crookston, Minn., with a 78-76 victory. Minnesota Crookston's last win in St. Cloud State, occurred Jan. 9, 2015 with a 91-68 victory over the Huskies at Halenbeck Hall.

• BATTLING THE BULLDOGS.  Minnesota Crookston went 1-1 last season against Minnesota Duluth. The Bulldogs have won five of the last six games in the series. Minnesota Crookston's last win in Duluth came Feb. 1, 2002 with a 83-75 victory over Minnesota Duluth.

Grow has six double-figure scoring games on the season. She had a season-high 18 points against Sioux Falls. Against St. Cloud State, Grow had a near double-double of 11 points and nine boards.

ON THE ASSIST. Maesyn Theisen has made a major impact as a sophomore point guard for the Bulldogs. She will be the key point that gets Minnesota Duluth's offense working this weekend.
