Turnovers and a Second Quarter Run Sends Sharks Past Golden Eagles 83-53

HONOLULU, Hawai'i – The University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team committed 27 turnovers Friday night as they fell 83-53 to Hawai'i Pacific University. The game marked the first tilt in the 2019 Malika Sports Tours Oahu Classic at The Shark Tank in Honolulu, Hawai'i. The Sharks were propelled by a 14-0 run in the second quarter.

The Golden Eagles fall to 0-3 on the season, while the Sharks move to 4-0. The Sharks have been to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the last three seasons. Friday's game was the first tilt at home for Hawai'i Pacific.

Minnesota Crookston shot 17-of-50 from the field for 34.0 percent and just 4-of-20 from beyond the arc for 20.0 percent. The Golden Eagles had 27 turnovers compared to just seven for the Sharks. Minnesota Crookston won the rebounding advantage for the third-straight game, this time by the tune of 40-37.

The Golden Eagles continued to show off a deep bench as they had 12 players score in the game Friday. Minnesota Crookston was led by nine points from Mattea Vetsch (Fr., G, Devils Lake, N.D.), her best game thus far early on in her career as a Golden Eagle. Mary Burke (R-Fr., F, Virginia, Minn.) chipped in eight points and six boards. Julia Peplinski (So., F/C, Hustisford, Wis.) notched seven points. Bren Fox (So., F/C, Norwood Young America, Minn.) had six points and eight boards. Paige Cornale (So., G, Oak Creek, Wis.) also added six points.

The Sharks had five players score in double-figures. Ally Bates led the way with 18 points. Starr Rivera and Alysha Marcucci each added 14 points. Abbey Noblett finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. Avery Cargill added 10 points, while Amy Baum had seven points and six assists.

Hawai'i Pacific shot 29-of-67 from the field for 43.3 percent. They were 6-of-16 from behind the three-point line for 37.5 percent.

Minnesota Crookston opened Friday night's game with a 2-0 lead after Paige Weakley (Sr., G/F, Kearney, Mo.) sank two free throws after Hawai'I Pacific was assessed an administrative technical foul to open the game.

The Sharks responded with a Baum triple and a Noblett hoop as Hawai'i Pacific moved into a 5-2 advantage. Marcucci sank a trey to extend the lead for the Sharks to 8-2.

Minnesota Crookston got their first field goal of the game as they worked the ball into the post to Amber Schoenicke (Sr., F/C, Marshall, Wis.) to stop the run and cut the lead to 8-4.

The Golden Eagles cut the deficit to just three at 10-8 as Ashley Freund (Jr., G/F, Jordan, Minn.) sank a three-pointer from the right wing. The Sharks used a bucket from Bates and two Noblett free throws to push the advantage back out to 14-10.

A Burke put-back cut the deficit to 14-13 late in the first quarter for Minnesota Crookston. Hawai'i Pacific responded as Marcucci got a steal and went coast to coast to push the lead back out to 16-13. Minnesota Crookston came right back as Abby Guidinger (Jr., G/F, Waukesha, Wis.) hit a bucket to slice the lead to 16-15.

The Sharks opened the second stanza with a five-straight points from Marcucci as Hawai'i  Pacific extended the lead to 21-15 with 8:22 remaining in the second quarter. The Sharks built their second quarter run to 7-0 with a pair of free throws from Baum. Hawai'I Pacific moved their run to 12-0 with a transition hoop from Noblett off an assist from Baum, as the Sharks took a 28-15 lead.

Hawai'i Pacific extended their run to 14-0 with an Cargill hoop off the steal to push the advantage to 30-15. The Golden Eagles halted the run with a Vetsch three-pointer to cut the lead to 32-18. The Vetsch bucket was the first of the second period for Minnesota Crookston.

The teams traded hoops until Bates utilized a pair from the charity stripe to extend the lead to 36-20. Minnesota Crookston responded as Post hit a pair of free throws. The Golden Eagles then got a steal leading to a quick Vetsch trey as Minnesota Crookston sliced the lead to 36-25.

Rivera scored four-straight for the Sharks to push the advantage back out to 40-25 with 2:56 left in the second quarter. The Golden Eagles cut into the lead at 42-29 with a Burke jumper. However, Hawai'i Pacific countered with a Baum basket and a Bates triple to take the 47-29 lead. The Sharks went into the break with the 47-29 lead.

The Golden Eagles shot 9-of-27 from the field for 33.3 percent. Minnesota Crookston was 3-of-12 from beyond the arc for 25 percent.

The Golden Eagles had 10 different players score in the first half. Burke and Vetsch paced Minnesota Crookston with six points apiece. Freund and Kylie Post (So., G, Corcoran, Minn.) each chipped in three points.

The Sharks hit on 17-of-35 of their shots for 48.6 percent. Hawai'i Pacific was 4-of-9 from behind the three-point line for 44.4 percent. The Sharks won the battle of the boards 22-16.

Hawai'i Pacific was led in the first half by 14 points from Bates, while Marcucci chipped in 10 points. Noblett and Rivera each added six points.

The Golden Eagles opened up the third quarter with buckets from Cornale and Fox to cut the deficit to 47-33. The Sharks got their first points of the second half on a Rivera fast-break basket to push the lead back out to 49-33. Noblett then connected on a pair of free throws to extend the Hawai'i Pacific advantage to 51-33. Bates pushed the run for Hawai'i Pacific to 6-0 as the Sharks went up 53-33.

Minnesota Crookston stopped the run with a Fox jumper as they cut the lead to 53-35. The Sharks picked right back up where they left off as Noblett completed an old-fashioned three-point play to 56-35.

The Golden Eagles pulled to within 58-39 following a pair of free throws from Peplinski with just under three minutes left in the third quarter. The Sharks came right back with baskets from Rivera and Bates to push the advantage back out to 62-39 with 2:10 remaining in the third stanza.

The Sharks grabbed their largest lead of the game at 66-41 following a Marcucci jumper. Fox nailed a pair at the charity stripe to cut the lead to 66-43 going into the break.

The Sharks opened the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run as they widened the gap to 73-43. Minnesota Crookston obtained their first points of the fourth stanza with a Peplinski trey to cut the lead back down to 73-46.

The Golden Eagles were unable to make a sizable dent in the lead for the Sharks the rest of the way as they fell 83-53.

Minnesota Crookston returns to action Sat., Nov. 16 at 11 p.m. C.T. against Chaminade University at The Shark Tank in Honolulu, Hawai'i.
