Wildcats Score Two Penalty Kick Goals Despite Strong Effort by Golden Eagles

CROOKSTON, Minn. – Wayne State College utilized two penalty kick goals from Sophie Ketchmark to earn a 2-0 win over University of Minnesota Crooskton Soccer. The Golden Eagles played well throughout Sunday's game, as they kept the score at 1-0 until the 83rd minute. Sunday was the second game of the home weekend for the Golden Eagles in Crookston, Minn.

Minnesota Crookston played a strong first stanza as they were able to connect passes and generate opportunities on the offensive end, posting six shots, while Wayne State notched seven shots.

The Golden Eagles fall to 0-12 (0-11 NSIC), while Wayne State moves to 6-5-4 (6-4-2 NSIC)

The Wildcats finished with 15 shots with eight shots on goal, while Minnesota Crookston had seven shots with two shots on goal.

Minnesota Crookston posted two corner kicks to seven for Wayne State. The Golden Eagles were led by two shots apiece from Maggie Peterson (Jr., F, Princeton, Minn.), and Kiya Gere (So., D, Vancouver, Wash.). Vanessa Shelton (Jr., MF, Tacoma, Wash.), Taivy Lagos (R-Fr., MF/F, and Jessica Withrow (Jr., MF/F, Gardnerville, Nev.).

Ketchmark had two goals on three shots on goal and five shots. Brooke Worrel notched two shots, as did Megan Philips, while Abby Sutton had two shots and one shots on goal.

Minnesota Crookston goalkeeper Athena DIMario Done (Jr., Gk, Windsor, Ontario) had two goals allowed with six saves. DiMario Done needs 15 saves to move past her former teammate Olivia Puttin for fifth all-time.

Rachel Grisham earned the shootout for Wayne State with two saves in ninety minutes.

Wayyne State took the first two shots of the game. The Wildcats found the back of the net after a foul in the box in the 18th minute. Ketchmark made the penalty kick, besting DiMario Done and putting the Wildcats up 1-0.

The Golden Eagles looked to make their comeback as they took the next three shots, but were unable to come up with the equalizer.

The Wildcats had an opportunity on a Rylie Wehner shot on goal in the 27th minute, but DiMario Done turned the chance away.

Wayne State had a chance in the 29th minute as DiMario Done denied a Megan Philips shot.

The Golden Eagles had back-to-back shots by Gere in the 31st and 33rd minutes. Her first chance was saved by Grisham.

Minnesota Crookston had a chance by Lagos in the 41st minute. Wayne State's opportunity from Ketchmark in the 43rd minute was put away by DiMario Done, as the Wildcats went into the break ahead 1-0.

The Golden Eagles were strong in the midfield in the first half with strong play from Shelton, Latafale Niumeitolu (Fr., MF, Sandy, Utah) and Tyler Goodwin (So., MF, Covina, Calif.).

Wayne State had eight shots in the second frame to just one for the Golden Eagles. Minnesota Crookston's lone chance in the second half came on a Peterson shot on net in the 81st minute, turned away by Grisham.

The Golden Eagles were unable to get much going on the attack in the second half, but were able to push the ball forward in moments.

Minnesota Crookston stayed in the fray throughout the majority of the second half until Wayne State was awarded a second penalty kick in the 83rd minute. Ketchmark put away the chance again, as she helped propel the Wildcats to the 2-0 win.

Minnesota Crookston had great positives to take away from Sunday, as they were at times the more aggressive side and were able to show some of their creativity offensively.

The Golden Eagles will look to build on their positives from Sunday heading into Fri., Nov. 1 at 3 p.m. against Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D.
