Golden Eagles Fall to No. 3 Mavericks in Grand Forks

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The University of Minnesota Crookston football team fell 81-0 Sat., Oct. 26 at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks, N.D. to No. 3 Minnesota State University.

The Golden Eagles fall to 0-8 on the season, while Minnesota State moves to 8-0. The game was the second of the season played at the Alerus Center, due to field conditions at Ed WIdseth Field due to the heavy rain the area has received throughout the fall.

Minnesota Crookston finished with 121 yards of offense on the game. Tristan Robbins (So., QB, Muskegon, Mich.) went 5-of-9 for 34 yards with an interception, while Jalin Scott (Sr., QB, Houston, Texas) was 1-of-6 for 5 yards through the air.

Joseph Eubanks (Jr., RB, Gilbert, Ariz.) had strong flashes for Minnesota Crookston as he carried 11 times for 34 yards for an average of 3.1 yards per carry. Alex Folz (Fr., RB, Spring Grove, Minn.) was also effective as he notched three carries for 31 yards, including breaking a 28-yard run on an outside pitch.

Through the air, Nathan Coy (R-So., WR, Sun Prairie, Wis.) had three catches for 24 yards, while Andy Groebner (So., WR, Andover, Minn.) had two catches for 11 yards.

Defensively, the Golden Eagles were led by Tysen White (Fr., DB, McFarland, Wis.) with a forced fumble and fumble recovery along with seven tackles. Austin Steele (R-So., LB, La Crosse, Wis.) added six tackles, as did Trevor Long, Jr. (R-Sr., LB, Brooklyn Park, Minn.). Anthony Putz (R-Fr., DL, Kasota, Minn.) and Ben Branscom (R-Jr., DL, Woodbury, Minn.) each had tackles for loss.

Minnesota State had 660 yards of offense with 274 through the air and 386 on the ground.

The Mavericks were guided by Kaleb Sleezer with nine carries for 135 yards and one touchdown. Nate Gunn added seven carries for 72 yards and three touchdowns. Justin Taormina had six carries for 67 yards and three touchdowns, while Chase Devitt had nine carries for 84 yards and a touchdown.

Through the air, Ryan Schlichte was 8-of-11 for 122 yards and a touchdown. Brevin Kaiser was 3-of-3 for 81 yards and a touchdown, while J.D. Ekowa was 5-of-9 for 71 yards and a touchdown. Their top target was Shane Zylstra, who became Minnesota State's all-time leading receiver, he had seven grabs for 128 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Minnesota State looked to Cole Schroedermeier with seven tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Brayden Thomas had seven tackles with four sacks. Spencer Hermus chipped in six tackles and an interception.

Minnesota Crookston hits the road Sat., Nov. 2 to play University of Minnesota Duluth at 1 p.m. in Duluth, Minn.
