Box Score Fayette, Iowa—The University of Minnesota Crookston women's soccer team scored with two seconds left in the match against Upper Iowa University to secure their first win of the season.
Coming off of a tie at Winona State, Minnesota Crookston was looking to keep the momentum, and pick up their first win of the season, as well as their first NSIC win of the season.
It was a defensive battle for the first 89 minutes, and 58 seconds as
Athena DiMario Done (So. Windsor, Ontario), and Natalie Rudrud were outstanding in goal for Minnesota Crookston and Upper Iowa, respectively.
The game wouldn't see much action in the first 45 minutes, as both teams would head to the halftime break knotted at zero.
The second half would shape up to be the same way, but with two seconds left in the regulation period of the match, freshman
Maggee Hodgdon (Newberg, Ore.) would score her biggest goal of her young career as a Golden Eagle.
Hodgdon would score the game winning goal unassisted as Rudrud would come out of the net, and the ball would find Hodgdon and drove in and put the ball in the back of the net to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead with two seconds left in the match.
That is how the match would end, as the Golden Eagles would beat the Peacocks 1-0.
For the Golden Eagles, DiMario Done would stop three Upper Iowa Shots. Minnesota Crookston was outshot by Upper Iowa 11-9, and had three less corner kicks than Upper Iowa.
Vanessa Shelton and
Maggee Hodgdon led the way with three shots a piece, while
Aimee Silva (Sr. Yakima, Wash.),
Lindsey Daml (Jr. North Pole, Alaska), and
Jessica Withrow (So. Gardnerville, Nev.) each had one shot apiece.
The exciting win for the Golden Eagles boosts the record to 1-6-1 overall, and 1-3-1 in the NSIC. The loss for the Peacocks drops them to 1-7 overall and 0-5 in the NSIC.
The next chance to watch the Golden Eagles will be for two matches during homecoming weekend, as Minnesota Crookston will welcome Southwest Minnesota State, and the University of Sioux Falls. The match against the Mustangs is set for this Friday at 3 p.m., while the match with the Cougars is set for 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
