Winona, Minn.—The University of Minnesota Crookston women's soccer team battled back late in the second half to tie Winona State 1-1 in a NSIC conference game Friday afternoon.
Athena DiMario Done (So. Windsor, Ontario) got the start in goal for Minnesota Crookston, and was solid all day in net. The sophomore goal keeper would stop 10 goals on the day, and would play a big part in the Golden Eagles getting the tie with the Warriors.
It was a defensive battle through the entire first half, and much of the second half. At the 67
th minute, the Warriors would draw first blood. Bridget Doran would beat DiMario Done on a free shot in the top left corner to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.
Minnesota Crookston would put pressure on Winona State late in the second half, and that pressure led to a huge goal at the 87
th minute.
Lindsey Daml (Jr. North Pole, Alaska) would beat Warriors goalkeeper Jourdan Vaulkner on the right side of the net for the game-tying goal and make it 1-1. That was the only shot the Golden Eagles would have on goal in the game.
That is how the second half would end, and overtime it was for these two NSIC foes. The Warriors would muster up just one shot in the first overtime period. The first overtime period would end at 1-1. With the first overtime period ending in a tie, the match would go to a second overtime period.
In the second overtime period, the Warriors would bring pressure, but DiMario Done was outstanding make two saves.
Winona State would finish the day with 18 shots, with 11 of them being on goal. Abby Bohanski, and Addie Royer would lead Winona State with four and three shots, respectively.
Minnesota Crookston would finish the game with two shots, and one on goal, as well as having one corner kick in the match.
With the tie, Minnesota Crookston moves to 0-6-1 overall, and 0-3-1 in the NSIC, while the Warriors move to 1-3-1 overall, and 1-2-1 in the NSIC.
Minnesota Crookston will continue the long NSIC road trip with a match Sunday morning where they will battle with Upper Iowa. That match is set for 11 a.m.
