Golden Eagles Fall Short in Doubleheader at U-Mary

BISMARCK, N.D. – The University of Minnesota Crookston dropped a mid-week doubleheader at University of Mary at the Sanford Sports Complex in Bismarck, N.D. Wed., April 18. The Golden Eagle softball team fell 5-2 in the first game and gave up a 5-4 advantage with seven runs given up in the seventh as they fell 11-6 in the second tilt.

The Golden Eagles fall to 5-29 (1-11 NSIC) with Wednesday's sweep. U-Mary improves to 13-14 (4-10 NSIC) with the pair of victories.

Game One
The Marauders scored five runs in the first four innings as they picked up the 5-2 win in the first game over the Golden Eagles.

Luisa Silvain (Jr., RHP, Tucson, Ariz.) got the start in the circle in game one for Minnesota Crookston. Silvain ran into trouble as she allowed five runs on 13 hits in seven innings with six strikeouts and a walk.

Brieann Backes got the win for U-Mary as she allowed just two runs on six hits in the complete game.

Minnesota Crookston was ignited by Gabriel Antolak (Sr., C, Zimmerman, Minn.), who went 2-of-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Khailyn Neumayer (Sr., OF, Morgan Hill, Calif.) finished 2-of-2, while Mikaela Rodriguez (So., 2B/SS, Laveen, Ariz.) finished 1-of-3 with one run scored.

U-Mary looked to Emma Noble, who was 2-of-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Kasidy Chileen went 2-of-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Colleen Crutchfield finished 2-of-4 with an RBI, while Rebekkah Keller was 2-of-3 with a run scored.

The Marauders struck early as they scored three runs in the top of the first. Chileen hit a two-run shot over the center field fence to drive in herself and Keller. Noble then hit a solo shot for U-Mary to move the lead to 3-0.

U-Mary extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the third when Crutchfield singled to center field to drive in Chileen.

The Marauders moved their advantage to 5-0 in the top of the fourth when Noble singled to drive in Rachel Laetsch.

Minnesota Crookston put a dent in the lead when Antolak hit a solo home run over the fence in left center to cut the lead to 5-1.

The Golden Eagles added another run in the bottom of the sixth when Rodriguez scored on a throwing error by the catcher on an Antolak stolen base.

Minnesota Crookson was unable to make up the three-run deficit as U-Mary took game one 5-2.

Game Two
The Golden Eagles had the 5-4 lead going into the top of sixth before giving up eight runs in the final two frames as they fell 11-6. Minnesota Crookston was seeking their second win of the conference season.

Paige Pitlick (So., RHP, Jordan, Minn.) got the start for the Golden Eagles as she gave up two runs on four hits in two innings of work. Kassidy Klaphake (Sr., RHP, Cold Spring, Minn.) gave up the loss after running into trouble late in the game. Klaphake allowed three earned runs on seven hits in four innings. Mikayla Jones (Jr., RHP, Huxley, Iowa) gave up two earned runs on one hit with two walks. Heather Cunningham (Sr., RHP, Jacksonville, Fla.) allowed one unearned run on three hits in 0.2 innings of work.

Madison Jahner picked up the victory in relief for the Marauders as she allowed just two runs on seven hits.

Minnesota Crookston had 11 hits and stranded 11 runners on the game. The Golden Eagles were led by Rodriguez, who was 2-of-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Taylor Allen (Fr., C/OF, Neepawa, Manitoba) was 2-of-3 with a run scored. Antolak finished 2-of-3 with an RBI and one run scored. Neumayer finished 2-of-4.

The Marauders looked to Paige Matsuki, who was 2-of-4 with four RBIs and one run scored. Keller was 3-of-5 with one RBI and two runs scored. Kylie Alto finished 3-of-5 with one run scored, while Lauren Lunt was 3-of-5 with an RBI and one run scored.

Minnesota Crookston pushed out to a 3-0 advantage in the bottom of the first. Rodriguez opened the scoring with a two-run home run to plate herself and Allen. Antolak made it back-to-back blasts with a solo shot to left center to move the advantage to 3-0.

U-Mary cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the second as Lunt singled to drive in Crutchfield.

The Marauders sliced the deficit down to 3-2 as Matsuki singled to center field to plate Keller.

U-Mary evened the slate 3-3 in the top of the fourth when Chileen doubled to center field to bring Laetsch to the dish.

The Golden Eagles broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth when Klaphake reached on a fielder's choice and drove in Rodriguez. Minnesota Crookston would be unable to extend the lead further as they stranded three on the base paths.

U-Mary knotted the game up 4-4 in the top of the sixth when Matsuki hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Laetsch.

Minnesota Crookston took the lead back 5-4 when Rocky Bjorge (So., 1B/3B, Prior Lake, Minn.) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Victoria Bayliss (Sr., OF, West Bloomfield, Mich.).

U-Mary broke the game open in the top of the seventh with seven runs. The Marauders were led by a Matsuki double to drive in Keller and Laetsch. U-Mary was also aided by two errors in the frame.

Minnesota Crookston cut the lead to 11-6 in the bottom of the seventh when Maggie Morales (Jr., 1B/OF, Tucson, Ariz.) hit a sacrifice fly to right center to drive in Cunningham. However, they would be unable to make up the rest of the lead as U-Mary won 11-6.

The Golden Eagles return to action Thurs., April 19 as they head to Bemidji, Minn. to face Bemidji State University at 2 and 4 p.m. at Chet Anderson Stadium.
