BEMIDJI, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston softball team split Wednesday with Bemidji State University Wed., April 19 at Chet Anderson Stadium in Bemidji, Minn. The 10-7 game one victory for Minnesota Crookston was the second in conference play for the Golden Eagles. Minnesota Crookston fell 7-6 in 12 innings as the Beavers picked up a walk-off single in the second tilt of the day.
The Golden Eagles sit at 6-30 (2-12 NSIC) following Wednesday's split. The Victory snapped an 11-game losing streak with their last win coming March 30 against Minnesota State University Moorhead. Bemidji State has a 15-19 (4-8 NSIC) record after the series split.
Game One
Luisa Silvain (Jr., RHP, Tucson, Ariz.) got the start for Minnesota Crookston and picked up the win after tossing 4.1 innings. She gave up just two earned runs on five hits with one strikeout and a walk.
Heather Cunningham (Sr., RHP, Jacksonville, Fla.) came on in relief and allowed three runs on four hits in 2.2 innings.
Minnesota Crookston had a great game at the plate with 10 runs on 16 hits.
Victoria Bayliss (Sr., OF, West Bloomfield, Mich.) had 4-of-5 with one RBI and two runs scored.
Mikaela Rodriguez (So., 2B/SS, Laveen, Ariz.) went 2-of-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Samantha Proctor (So., C/1B, Prior Lake, Minn.) finished 3-of-4 with two RBIs, while
Gabriel Antolak (Sr., C, Zimmerman, Minn.) was 2-of-5 with two RBIs and one run scored.
Stephi Dullum got the start for Bemidji State and gave up seven runs on nine hits in 1.1 innings. Rochelle Koshalek suffered the loss for the Beavers as she gave up three runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings in the circle.
Bemidji State was guided by Jessica Burlingame, who was 2-of-4 with two runs scored. Makayla Pagel finished 2-of-4 with one run scored.
The Golden Eagles were quick out of the gate with five runs in the top of the first.
Haley Strachan (Jr., OF, Phoenix, Ariz.) scored to make it 1-0 as Rodriguez reached on a fielder's choice. Antolak continued the scoring as she singled up the middle to drive in Bayliss.
Maycee Trujillo (Jr., 3B, Sioux Falls, S.D.) later doubled down the right field line to drive in Antolak and Rodriguez.
Rocky Bjorge (So., 1B/3B, Prior Lake, Minn.) delivered a single to right center to plate
Khailyn Neumayer (Sr., OF, Morgan Hill, Calif.) to move the advantage to 5-0.
The Golden Eagles added two runs to their advantage in the top of the second. Antolak singled to center field to plate Bayliss. Neumayer then doubled to right center to plate Rodriguez to put Minnesota Crookston up 7-0 on Bemidji State.
The Beavers picked up a run in the bottom of the second when Lacy Hittner reached on a fielding error to bring Lexi Derrick in to score. The run cut the deficit to 7-1.
Minnesota Crookston moved the lead to 8-1 in the top of the third when Bayliss hit an infield single to drive in Proctor.
Bemidji State moved a run closer when Alexandra Ripka doubled to right center to plate Pagel to cut the deficit to 8-2.
The Beavers made up ground as they sliced the lead to 8-4 in the bottom of the fourth. Burlingame started the scoring as she tripled to right center to drive in Shania Kinghorn. Burlingame later came in as Pagel reached on a fielding error to cut the lead to 8-4.
Minnesota Crookston added a pair of security runs in the top of the seventh when Rodriguez had a bases clearing triple to bring Strachan and Proctor in to score. The runs put the Golden Eagles ahead 10-4.
The Beavers got three runs back in the bottom of the seventh but ultimately fell short 10-7. Kelsey McAllister doubled to score Burlingame. Brooke Phillips then hit an infield single to plate Olivia Tucker to cut the lead to 10-6. Sami Trana walked with the bases loaded to bring McAllister in to score.
Game Two
Bemidji State overcame a 4-1 deficit in the bottom of the sixth as they knotted the game up 4-4 to force extra innings in the second game. Phillips came through with a walk-off single down the left field line to drive in Burlingame as the Beavers walked off with a 7-6 win in the 12
th inning.
Paige Pitlick (So., RHP, Jordan, Minn.) got the ball in the game two start. She gave up just three earned runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings with three strikeouts.
Kassidy Klaphake (Sr., RHP, Cold Spring, Minn.) was saddled with the loss despite a solid outing. Klaphake allowed three runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
Rachel Burkland got the win in relief for Bemidji State as she gave up two runs on eight hits in eight frames. Tucker got the start and gave up four runs on 11 hits in four innings.
Minnesota Crookston brought their bats again in the second game as they notched 19 hits on the game. Strachan went 4-of-7 with one run scored. Rodriguez finished 4-of-6 with one run scored. Antolak was 2-of-5 with two runs scored, while Proctor was 2-of-6 with three RBIs.
Bemidji State looked to Phillips, who was 4-of-6 with one run scored and one RBI. Pagel finished 3-of-6, while McAllister was 3-of-5 with one RBI. Burlingame hit 2-of-7 with two RBIs and one run scored.
The Golden Eagles again got started quickly with three runs in the top of the first. Proctor delivered a bases clearing double to left center to score Antolak, Neumayer and Bayliss to put Minnesota Crookston ahead 3-0.
The Beavers cut into the lead with a McAllister double to plate Phillips.
The Golden Eagles extended the lead to 4-1 as Strachan scored when Neumayer grounded into a double play.
Bemidji State evened up the slate in the bottom of the sixth. Megan Castor scored as Kristin Monkman scored on a fielding error. Burlingame then delivered a single to right field to plate Sami Dullum and Tucker to cut the lead to 4-4.
Neither team scored in regulation as the two went to extra innings.
The Golden Eagles finally added runs in the top of the ninth. Bjorge came through with a single to center field to drive in Rodriguez and Antolak to put Minnesota Crookston ahead 6-4.
Bemidji State fought back to tie the game up 6-6 when Burkland doubled to left center to drive in Trana and Hiltner.
The Beavers finally broke the tie in the bottom of the 12
th as Phillips delivered a walk-off single to plate Burlingame as Bemidji State won the game 7-6.
Minnesota Crookston's series against Wayne State College and Augustana University will likely be moved to Sun., April 22 and Mon., April 23 due to field conditions.
