Mankato, Minn.- The University of Minnesota Crookston soccer team traveled to Mankato for a Friday afternoon match with the #13 Mavericks in what was a close first period of play with MSU leading 1-0 at the break but three second half goals proved to be too much in the 4-0 Minnesota State victory.
The Mavericks outshot the Golden Eagles 41-0 but the lopsided stat line was a product of UM Crookston forcing the MSU squad to take a great deal of long shots. The Golden Eagles back line played tough throughout the conference match with
Madison Korus (Jr., Lexington, Minn.) and
Paige Pettit (So., St. Michael, Minn.) blocking numerous Maverick shots.
Olivia Puttin (So., Rogers, Minn.) got the start in goal for the Crookston side, making 15 total saves through 90 minutes of play.
Jenny Hoerter (Sr., Stevens Point, Wis.) opened up the game's scoring as she headed a ball past Puttin in the 17
th minute of play. The score was the only goal of the first half, but the Mavericks found the back of the net in the 60
th and 63
rd marks; and closed things out with the game's final score in the 78
th minute of play. The win improves Minnesota State's record to 8-1 overall, 6-0 in NSIC play.
The Golden Eagles will now travel to St. Paul, Minn. for a Sunday afternoon match at Concordia University, St. Paul. The Golden Bears were knocked off 3-0 by Bemidji State University in a Friday night game and enter the Sunday match with a record of 5-3-1, 3-2-1 in conference play.
