CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston had their comeback fall just short in a 2-1 loss to Winona State University Sat., Sept. 16 at UMC Soccer Field. A
Jessica Withrow (Fr., MF/F, Gardnerville, Nev.) goal in the 82
nd minute mounted a comeback for the Golden Eagles, but it would fall short as the Warriors would hang on for the victory.
Minnesota Crookston falls to 0-4 on the season. Winona State improved to 2-2-1 (1-0-1) with Saturday's victory.
Minnesota Crookston came out with an offensive mind in the first 10 minutes as they had the first two chances of the game with shots from
Lindsey Daml (So., D/MF, North Pole Alaska) and
Maggie Peterson (Fr., F, Princeton, Minn.). However, the Golden Eagles wouldn't take advantage of playing the majority of the first 10 minutes in their offensive half.
Winona State would put away their first chance of the game as Minnesota Crookston had a breakdown off an offensive opportunity of their own. Darian Molter would get the ball on the wing and would dribble past the Golden Eagles before connecting with Abby Bohanski. Bohanski would win the ball from Minnesota Crookston goalie
Olivia Puttin (So., GK, Rogers, Minn.) and put it in the back of the net.
Neither team had another shot on the goal for the rest of the first half as Winona State went into the break up 1-0. Winona State out-shot Minnesota Crookston by the tune of 4-3 in the opening half with their one shot on goal.
The Warriors would go on the offensive to open up the second half as they generated three shots on goal and eight shots overall in the first 20 minutes of the second period. Winona State finally put away their second goal of the game when Courtney Wiencek took the ball off of a Minnesota Crookston defender near the goal box and put it past Puttin to make it 2-0.
Minnesota Crookston countered later in the second half as Peterson got the ball on the left wing and dribbled up the side before centering the ball to Withrow, who put it past Rachel Oleson for the first goal of her career.
The Golden Eagles had one more shot on the game, but would come up empty in their comeback as they fell 2-1 to Winona State.
Jessica Scott (Jr., D, Post Falls, Idaho) and Withrow had the lone shots on goal for U of M Crookston with Withrow putting her shot in the back of the net.
Bohanski and Wiencek each had two shots on goal with both converting goals.
Oleson picked up the win in goal for Winona State after tallying one save and one goal against in 90 minutes as she wasn't heavily tested on the day.
Puttin gave up two goals and picked up five saves.
Winona State had 11 fouls on the day compared to eight for Minnesota Crookston.
The Golden Eagles will return to action Sun., Sept. 17 at 1 p.m. versus Upper Iowa University.
