Box Score 2 DURANT, Okla. – The University of Minnesota Crookston volleyball team dropped their first two games of the 2017 season at the South Central Classic in Durant, Okla. The Golden Eagles fell 3-0 to No. 21 University of Central Missouri and 3-0 to tournament host Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
Minnesota Crookston opens the season with a 0-2 mark as the
Sarah Rauen era opened up for the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles were led in the first match against Central Missouri by 11 kills from
Kassi Green (R-Sr., OH, Anoka, Minn.), who hit .258 for the match.
Callie Schapekahm (Jr., MH, Eagan, Minn.) added seven kills and hit .600.
At setter,
Kaycie Hagen (Sr., S, Ham Lake, Minn.) and Schapekahm each had six assists.
Defensively,
Kassi Green led the team with eight digs, while
Ali Schueler (R-SO., Lib., Howards Grove, Wis.) added seven digs. On the block,
Kaitlin Sikkink (R-So., MH, St. Charles, Minn.) paced the U of M Crookston with two block assists and one solo block.
Central Missouri was led by 14 kills from Kasey Hohlen, who hit .824 for the match. Aubree Bell added nine kills, while Hannah VanBuskirk chipped in six kills.
At setter, the Jennies looked to 10 assists from Bell.
Defensively, Kylie Hohlen led the squad with 14 digs.
Central Missouri took the first set early as they were out to a 14-7 lead after a Kylie Hohlen service ace. The Golden Eagles would pull within 16-12 on a Bell attack error. The Jennies would come through and take the first set 25-14.
Minnesota Crookston was close early on in the second set as they were within 16-14 following a Sikkink kill. However, Central Missouri took six of the next seven points to take the momentum and ultimately win the frame 25-17.
The Golden Eagles got out to the early 13-2 lead led by two kills apiece from
Kassi Green and Schapekahm. However, Central Missouri would win 23 of the last 31 points to win 25-21 and take the match 3-0.
In the second match of the day, Minnesota Crookston was led by 12 kills from
Kassi Green.
Kelci Green (R-Sr., MH, Anoka, Minn.) added six kills.
At setter,
Kaycie Hagen (Sr., S, Savage, Minn.) notched 23 assists and helped the U of M Crookston to a .127 hitting percentage with 31 kills and 18 errors.
Defensively, Hagen led the way with seven digs, while
Kassi Green chipped in six digs. Schapekahm,
Kelci Green and Sikkink each had two block assists in the second match.
The Savage Storm looked to Arianna Baker's 14 kills and .700 hitting percentage. Abby Jameson chipped in 12 kills and hit .320 for the match. At setter, Alissa Benson led the way with 38 assists, helping Southeastern Oklahoma State to a .311 hitting percentage with 47 kills and 15 errors.
Defensively, Caitlin Cosby paced the team with 19 digs, while Baker led the block with four block assists.
The Golden Eagles went to the wire with the Savage Storm in the first set, as they were knotted up 24-24 after a Taylor Robinson service error. Southeastern Oklahoma State closed out the frame with a kill from Baker and an attack error from
Kassi Green to take the set 26-24.
The Savage Storm used a 6-1 run to open the second set to set the tone for the rest of the frame. Southeastern Oklahoma State would take the second frame 25-13.
The Savage Storm took the final set 25-18 following a
Deaira Gresham (Fr., OH, Maplewood, Minn.) service error.
Minnesota Crookston returns to action at the South Central Classic on Sat., Sept. 2. The Golden Eagles will face Southern Nazarene University at 10 a.m. and Ouachita Baptist University at 2 p.m. in Durant, Okla.
