University of Minnesota Crookston Athletics

San Marcos, Calif. -- Minnesota Crookston volleyball would play two on Saturday in southern California, starting with conference foe Bemidji State for an early morning tilt.

Bemidji State would control the first two sets and have to hold off the scrappy Golden Eagles for the sweep of Minnesota Crookston (13-25, 13-25, 22-25).

Minnesota Crookston falls to 1-6 on the year and will close out the Cougar Classic later today against Saint Michael's.

Set One

The first set would be all Beavers, who would jump out to an early lead and never look back, winning the opening set by 12.

Madison Carsten (Sr., OH, Wadena, Minn.) finished the first set with four kills on 13 total attacks, while Lexi Scharold (Jr., MH, Alexandria, Kent.) added two kills.

BSU finished the first set hitting a whopping .390.

Set Two

Brooklyn Gysbers (Fr., OH, White Bear Lake, Minn.) would give the Golden Eagles an early 1-0 lead, but six straight points by the Beavers with three service errors would give the Beavers a 6-1 lead, forcing a timeout by Kathleen Rustad.

The Golden Eagles would end the run with a kill from Jacelyn Crane (Fr., MH, Cumming, Iowa).

Minnesota Crookston would face an uphill climb and would be unable to come back and win the set, falling by 12, once again.

Set Three

BSU would jump out to another big lead, but Minnesota Crookston would start to chip away.

Adrienne Venditto (So., DS, Bovey, Minn.) would collect two service aces in the midst of a 5-0 run, forcing a Beaver timeout with the score reading 15-14, in favor of BSU.

The Beavers would then see their lead grow to four, but Minnesota Crookston would get back within two on a number of occasions, including on a big swing by Penelope Vertin (Sr., MH, Wayzata, Minn.).

Minnesota Crookston would show great fight in the set, but would fall by three.

Individual Stats

Carsten and Gysbers were solid all match, finishing with nine kills apiece. Carsten also added 12 digs in the match. The freshman and senior each hit above .300 in the match.

Ehresmann added 24 assists on the day.

As a team, Minnesota Crookston hit .205 on the day, but Bemidji State was outstanding in that department, hitting .363 in the match.
