CROOKSTON, Minn. – An
Anthony Stewart inside the park grand slam and a complete game shutout from
Jacob Butcher guided the University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team to a sweep of University of Mary Wed., April 5 at UMC Baseball Field.
The Golden Eagles rode the arm of Butcher to a 6-0 win in the first game. Butcher held the Marauders to just three hits and one walk with five strikeouts in seven innings on Wednesday. The U of M Crookston would be aided by a two-run home run from Stewart and two RBI's from
Zach Frazier (R-Jr., C, Grand Rapids, Minn.).
In game two, Minnesota Crookston upended U-Mary 10-8. The Golden Eagles would have only four hits but would walk eight times and be hit by six pitches. Stewart would hit his second home of the game and his third of the season as the junior put a ball deep to the fence in right center and used his speed to jet to a rare inside the park grand slam in the third inning to put the U of M Crookston ahead 10-2.
Matthew Dallas (Sr., RHP, Boise, Idaho) would earn the win in relief, while
Zach Seipel (So., RHP, Eagan, Minn.) earned his fifth save of the season.
Minnesota Crookston moved to 13-15 (7-9 NSIC) with the Wednesday sweep. The Golden Eagles sit in a tie for eighth place with Bemidji State Universty. U-Mary falls to 5-20 (1-15 NSIC) with the losses. They are in 15
th place in the conference standings.
Game One
Butcher would earn his third victory of the season in the first game of the doubleheader as he picked up the complete game shutout.
Minnesota Crookston would strand five on base in the first three innings. The Golden Eagles would make up for the first three innings in the bottom of the fourth as they scored three.
Zach Frazier (R-Jr., C, Grand Rapids, Minn.) opened up the scoring with an infield single to plate
Mitchell Bornhauser (Jr., OF, Northfield, Minn.). Stewart would then hit his first home run of the day as he put one over the right field fence to plate himself and
Jeremy Spinner (R-Jr., IF, Phoenix, Ariz.).
The Golden Eagles would extend their advantage in the fifth.
Ethan Mushitz (Jr., SS, East Grand Forks, Minn.) started off the scoring in the frame with a sacrifice fly to center field to plate
James Cullinane (Jr., OF, San Franciso, Calif.). A Bornhauser double to left field would drive in
Wyatt Peppel (R-Fr., OF, Greenbush, Minn.) to push the lead to 5-0. They would push their lead to 6-0 as Frazier singled through the left side to drive in Bornhauser. The Golden Eagles would hold on for the 6-0 victory.
Bornhauser went 2-of-3 with one run scored. Stewart would go 1-of-4 with two RBI's and one run scored, while Frazier was 2-of-2 with two RBI's.
Game Two
Jayden Grover (Fr., RHP, Cooperstown, N.D.) got the start and pitched well until running into some trouble in the fifth inning. He would pitch 4.1 innings and give up five earned runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts.
The Marauders opened up the scoring in game two as Andrew Beyer scored on a throw to second base to catch Seth Meide stealing in the first inning.
U-Mary would extend their lead to 2-0 in the third as Beyer crossed the plate on an error on a throw to third base from Frazier.
Minnesota Crookston would have a huge third inning as U-Mary ran into control problems with four walks, three hits and four batters hit by pitches. The Golden Eagles would score 10 runs as they batted 15 in the inning.
The Golden Eagles started the scoring in the third inning when Stewart doubled to left center to drive in Frazier. The U of M Crookston tied the game up 2-2 as
Scott Mortenson (Jr., OF, East Grand Forks, Minn.) was walked with the bases loaded to plate Stewart. In the next at-bat, Bornhauser was hit by a pitch with the bases still loaded to drive in
Reed Hjelle (So., 1B, East Grand Forks, Minn.). Mushitz would reach base in the next frame with an error by the short stop as Mortenson and Cullinane came around to score to make it 5-2.
Minnesota Crookston continued the scoring in the third when Spinner walked with the bases loaded to drive in Bornhauser. Stewart then came through with the play of the day as he hit the ball to deep right center and used his quickness to jet around the bases, clearing them, and beating a throw home to accomplish a rare inside the park grand slam. He would drive in himself, Spinner, Frazier and Mushitz to make it 10-2.
U-Mary would cut into the lead as Chris Scott singled to center field in the fourth to drive in Daulton Sauce to make it 10-3.
The Marauders would cut the lead to 10-5 to in fifth. Darius Barlas started out the scoring in the frame with a fielder's choice to drive in Seth Siverson. Lane Huck then doubled to right center to plate Barlas and Beyer.
U-Mary would cut the lead to 10-7 in the sixth when Beyer tripled down the right field line to plate Connor Doll.
The Marauders would make their final charge in the eighth when Will Pettener reached on an error by Mushitz to plate Siverson.
Owen Ellefson (Jr., RHP, Argyle, Minn.) would appear in 1.2 innings in relief, giving up one earned run on two hits with two strikeouts.
Dallas would pick up the win after an effective inning in the seventh. Dallas would give up no runs on two hits with two strikeouts.
Seipel would shut the door on the Marauders in the eighth and ninth as he gave up an unearned run on one hit with one strikeout.
Stewart led the U of M Crookston going 2-of-4 with five RBI's and two runs scored. Hjelle finished 1-of-4 with one run scored, while Spinner was 1-of4 with one RBI and one run scored.
Minnesota Crookston will return to action April 8 and 9 at UMC Baseball Field against Augustana University.
