Minnesota Crookston Earns Split Monday against Winona State

WINONA, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team picked up a split with Winona State University Mon., March 20 at Maxwell-Loughrey Field in Winona, Minn.

The Golden Eagles fell 5-0 in the first game of the doubleheader as the Warriors' Daniel Karlin-Kamin picked up the four-hit shutout. In game two, Minnesota Crookston upended Winona State 11-6 led by Justin Yutrzenka (Fr., RHP, Argyle, Minn.), who picked up his second win on the mound, while the Golden Eagle bats were led by four RBI's from Reed Hjelle (So., 1B, East Grand Forks, Minn.) and three from Mitchell Bornhauser (Jr., OF, Northfield, Minn.).

Minnesota Crookston moved to 7-9 (1-3 NSIC) with the win Monday. The Golden Eagles fell in their first conference series with the Warriors 1-3. Winona State sits at 3-11 after the first conference series.

The Golden Eagles would threaten in the top of the second. With two outs, David Olson (Sr., C, Stillwater, Minn.) and Bornhauser would single. However, Karlin-Kamin got Wyatt Peppel (R-Fr., OF/DH/Greenbush, Minn.) to strike out.

Winona State would get on the board in the bottom of the third when Joe Kubera flew out to right field to plate Treyton Larson to make it 1-0.

The starter for U of M Crookston Jacob Butcher (R-Jr., RHP, Palmer, Alaska) would run into some trouble in the bottom of the fifth as he gave up four runs. Winona State opened up the scoring in the frame when Derek Martin singled and Kipp Youngquist came around to score on a fielding error by James Cullinane (Jr., OF, San Francisco, Calif.) in left field. Kubera would then single through the right side to plate Derek Martin.

Butcher would be pulled for Jayden Grover (Fr., RHP, Cooperstown, N.D.). Butcher would give up a double to Jesus Cazares as he drove in Kubera and Larson. Grover got out of further trouble by getting a ground out and a foul out. Winona State would lead 5-0 at the conclusion of the inning.

Minnesota Crookston would get singles in the top of the sixth and the top of the seventh but would be unable to put a dent in the Winona State lead.


Butcher would give up four earned runs on five hits with one strikeout in 4.1 innings. Grover would also pitch, going 1.2 innings and giving up no runs on one hit.


Minnesota Crookston would get hits from Ethan Mushitz (Jr., SS, East Grand Forks, Minn.), Olson, Bornhauser and Brandon Kresl (Sr., 1B/DH, Crookston, Minn.) in the first game.
In game two, Yutrzenka would get the win after going six innings and giving up four earned runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts.

Minnesota Crookston would open the scoring in game two as Riley Thompson (Jr., OF, Owatonna, Minn.) hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Mushitz.

Winona State would even up the slate 1-1 as Mushitz reached on a throwing error by Jeremy Spinner (R-Jr., IF, Phoenix, Ariz.) at third base, scoring Kubera.

Minnesota Crookston would push the lead to 2-1 in the third as Anthony Stewart (R-Jr., OF, Oak Harbor, Wash.) scored on a Hjelle fielder's choice. The lead would push out to 3-1 when Bornhauser doubled down the left field line to drive in Hjelle.

Winona State would cut the lead to 3-2 when Cazares doubled to right field to drive in Kubera.

The U of M Crookston would come up with a big inning in the fourth. Mushitz would walk with the bases loaded to drive in David Anaya (R-Jr., UT, Tucson, Ariz.). Hjelle then singled up the middle to bring home Spinner and Stewart. A Thompson double to right center would bring home Mushitz to make it 7-2.

Winona State would get two runs back in the fifth when Cazares continued his strong day with a double down the left field line to drive in Hommes and Larson to 7-4.

However, the Golden Eagles responded in the sixth frame. A Hjelle double to right field would drive in Stewart. Bornhauser then doubled down the right field line to drive in Hjelle. A Cullinane single to left field would drive home Bornhauser to make it 10-4.

The Warriors would get within 10-6 in the sixth inning when Sam Kohnle singled to left field to plate Andrew Pilner. Michael Hommes would reach on a fielder's choice to plate Youngquist.
Minnesota Crookston would cement their 11-6 win in the eighth when Bornhauser singled to right field to drive in Thompson.

The loss for Winona State would go to Brett Herber, who gave up three earned runs on six hits in three innings.

Minnesota Crookston would be led in game two at the plate by Hjelle, who was 3-of-5 with four RBI's and two runs scored, while Bornhauser was 4-of-4 with three RBI's and one run scored. Stewart would go 3-of-6 with three runs scored, while Anaya was 3-of-5 with one run scored.

Gabriel Cavasos (Jr., RHP, San Antonio, Texas) would also pitch in game two going one inning and giving up no runs on no hits. Matthew Dallas (Sr., RHP, Boise, Idaho) would come in and give up one hit and two walks in one inning. Zach Seipel (So., RHP, Eagan, Minn.) concluded the game by going one inning and giving up no runs on no hits.

Minnesota Crookston will return to action March 25-26 with a four-game series at University of Sioux Falls.
