Golden Eagles Fall in Extra Innings 6-4 to Missouri-St. Louis

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis used a two RBI single from Jake Beckwith in extra innings to comeback from behind to upend University of Minnesota Crookston baseball Sat., March 11. The game was played at Joe DiMaggio Sports Complex in Clearwater, Fla.

The Golden Eagles got another impressive pitching performance out of Cody Pamperin (Sr., RHP, Shakopee, Minn.), who has been strong in all three of his starts. Pamperin went 6.1 innings, allowing just one earned run on six hits with three strikeouts. Pamperin is 1-0 on the season with a 1.80 ERA in 15.0 innings pitched.

Pamperin set the Golden Eagles up for a win as he left the game with a 4-2 lead over the Tritons. However, Jayden Grover (Fr., RHP, Cooperstown, N.D.) would give up two runs in the eighth to eventually force extra innings and Zach Seipel (So., RHP, Eagan, Minn.) would give up what would be the game-winning runs in the top of the 10th  as he would suffer the loss on the day.

Missouri-St. Louis would strike first in the second as Tom DeCero singled to drive in Cooper Vinz, who had reached on an error at third base by Jeremy Spinner (Sr., IF, Phoenix, Ariz.).

Minnesota Crookston would answer with a big bottom of the second. David Olson (Sr., C, Stillwater, Minn.) would come through as the designated hitter with a two RBI double to plate Riley Thompson (Jr., OF, Owatonna, Minn.) and James Cullinane (Jr., OF, San Francisco, Calif.). Anthony Stewart (R-Jr., OF, Oak Harbor, Wash.) would steal second later in the inning and Missouri-St. Louis would throw the ball away on an error by the catcher trying to catch him. This would allow Olson to score. Stewart would score on a balk to make it 4-0, as he continued to create problems on the base path with his speed.

Missouri-St. Louis cut the lead to 4-2 in the top of the third as Vinz singled to drive in Nick Ulrey. Vinz would be thrown out at third by Thompson in right field to promptly end the inning for the Tritons.

Minnesota Crookston would threaten with runners on the corners in the fourth after a double from Zach Frazier (R-Jr., C, Grand Rapids, Minn.) and a single from Olson. However the Tritons would get three out from there to leave the runners stranded and the score at 4-2 in favor of the Golden Eagles.

Pamperin would do a good job at continuing to keep Missouri-St. Louis quiet through the sixth inning. Grover would come on and pitch a fantastic top of the seventh as he mowed down the order for the Tritons.

Minnesota Crookston would strand two runners again in the bottom of the seventh as Stewart singled and Ethan Mushitz (Jr., SS, East Grand Forks, Minn.) reached on a walk. However, the Tritons would get a key groundout to stay within 4-2.

Missouri-St. Louis would get to the freshman Grover in the top of the eighth after he retired the first batter. Grover would walk Tanner Hudson and allow a Vinz single to get chased from the game. Seipel would come on and struggle with control as two consecutive wild pitches would lead to Hudson scoring. Jacob Monti would then single to drive in Vinz to knot it up 4-4. Seipel would be able to pitch his way out of the inning to keep the score knotted up.

Neither team could get anything going in the allotted nine innings as the two teams got to play some extra baseball Saturday in Clearwater.

Seipel would again run into some control issues in the top of the 10th. He would walk Ulrey in the leadoff spot. After getting two outs, he would issue another walk to Monti giving Missouri-St. Louis two base-runners with two outs. That is when Beckwith would come through with his clutch single to drive in Vinz. Monti would score on an error by Cullinane in left field.
Jon Shanker would retire the Golden Eagles in order in the bottom of the 10th as he got the win on Saturday. Shanker pitched 2.2 innings of shutout relief, giving up just one hit with two strikeouts.

Zach Lindsay got the start and went 7.1 innings, giving up two earned runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts.

Matthew Dallas (Sr., RHP, Boise, Idaho) also pitched for the U of M Crookston, going 0.1 innings and giving up no runs on no hits with one walk.

Minnesota Crookston looked to Cullinane on the day, who went 2-of-4 with one runs scored. Olson would also have a big day as he was 2-of-4 with two RBI's and one run scored. The Golden Eagles also got hits from Stewart, Mushitz, Thompson, Frazier, David Anaya (R-Jr., IF, Tucson, Ariz.) and Jason Angelo (Jr., IF, Manteca, Calif.).

The Golden Eagles will return to action in the Clearwater Invitational March 13 at 9 a.m. C.T. against Rockhurst University at Jack Russell Memorial Stadium.
