JAMESTOWN, N.D. – The University of Minnesota Crookston men's basketball team ceded a 17-point lead in the second half over the University of Jamestown as they fell 87-85. The Jimmies ended the game on a 38-19 run over the last 14 minutes to come away with the win in a game that came down to the final seconds.
The Jimmies took the lead 86-83 on a three-pointer from Sam Johnson with 1:29 remaining. The Golden Eagles would close within one on a pair of Cleary free throws and would have a chance late in the game, but a turnover for Cleary would thwart their opportunity.
Minnesota Crookston falls to 2-3 after the tough loss. Jamestown improved to 7-2 with the win. The Jimmies are off to a strong start after beating NSIC foe University of Mary and a 67-60 loss to another NSIC foe Northern State University. The Golden Eagles continue to show improvement from last year, but are looking to put together a full 40 minutes on both sides of the ball.
The Golden Eagles looked to reining NSIC North Player of the Week Harrison Cleary (So., G, Oak Creek, Wis.), who finished with a season-high 36 points on 13-of-27 from the field, 2-of-4 from beyond the arc and 8-of-10 from the charity stripe. Cleary added eight rebounds, but turned the ball over seven times on the night. Four other Golden Eagles notched double-figure scoring on the evening. Chase Knickerbocker (Jr., G/F, Annandale, Minn.) finished with 13 points and six boards. Both Ben Juhl (Fr., G, Clive, Iowa) and Alan Hodge, Jr. (Jr., G, Dallas, Texas) notched 11 points. Javier Nicolau (So., F/C, Castellon, Spain) posted the best game of his young career with 10 points and seven boards off the bench.
Minnesota Crookston shot 31-of-68 for 49.2 percent on the game, but they were just 12-of-29 for 41.4 percent in the final half. The Golden Eagles shot 9-of-16 for 56.3 percent from beyond the arc and 14-of-18 for 77.8 percent from the foul line. Minnesota Crookston dominated the glass 39-26.
Jamestown was on-fire from the field on the night as they shot 35-of-62 for 56.5 percent. The Jimmies were 13-of-25 for 52.0 percent from beyond the arc. Jamestown struggled from the charity stripe where they hit just 4-of-11 for 36.4 percent.
The Jimmies also had five players in double-figure scoring. Kevin Oberweiser and Leighton Sampson each had 16 points. Oberweiser added five assists on the night. Johnson, who had the game-winner, notched 15 points all on his five triples. Jon Purintun chipped in 14 points, five rebounds and five assists, while Brady Birch came off the bench for 12 points and four boards.
The Jimmies got out to a 9-3 lead after an Oberweiser trey as the shot clock expired. The Golden Eagles cut the lead down to 11-7 following a Cleary runner in the lane. Minnesota Crookston would continue to piece away at the lead and would knot it up 11-11 following a pair of free throws from Juhl. Jamestown would respond with a clutch three-pointer from Johnson from the left wing to put the Jimmies up 14-11.
The Golden Eagles countered with a 5-0 run of their own with a put-back from Nicolau and a step-back three-pointer from Hodge to put Minnesota Crookston ahead 16-14 with 13:36 left in the first half.
Jamestown would take the lead back 19-18 with a clutch three-pointer from Oberweiser. The Golden Eagles came right back and went on a 9-2 run to push their advantage to 27-21 paced by two three-pointers from Juhl. The Jimmies closed to within 29-25 with a bucket from Sampson. Minnesota Crookston responded and got the advantage out to 39-28 on a 10-3 run following a basket from Juhl.
The Golden Eagles would be able to extend their lead to as much as 16 at 47-31 after a basket from Nicolau. Jamestown would close the half on an 11-4 run as they would cut the lead to 51-42 on an Isaiah Dobson three-pointer as the half-time buzzer rang.
Minnesota Crookston shot 19-of-34 at the break for 55.9 percent. The Golden Eagles connected on 5-of-6 from beyond the arc for 83.0 percent and 8-of-12 from the foul line for 66.7 percent. Cleary ignited a potent first half for Minnesota Crookston with 22 points on 9-fo-15 from the field. Juhl had 11 points, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. Knickerbocker chipped in nine points, while Nicolau was crucial off the bench for the Golden Eagles with six points and six rebounds.
Jamestown was 18-of-32 at the half for 56.3 percent. They shot 5-of-12 from beyond the arc for 41.7 percent and just 1-of-5 from the charity stripe for 20.0 percent. The Jimmies looked to 14 points from Sampson. Oberweiser chipped in six points and three boards, while Ben Weisbeck, Purintun, Jack Talley and Birch all had four points apiece in the first half.
The Golden Eagles opened the second half as Gable Smith (R-Jr., F, Lodi, Wis.) put down the dunk to propel Minnesota Crookston to a 53-42 lead. Jamestown would pull back within nine after a Purintun three. However, the Golden Eagles staved off the Jimmies as Hodge hit a triple to push the lead out to 61-49 with 15:53 left in the game.
Minnesota Crookston moved their lead to 66-49 with a Nicolau put-back. The Jimmies would pull back within 10 points following triples from Johnson and Oberweiser. A Purintun triple would bring the Minnesota Crookston lead down to 66-59 as he continued the 9-0 run for Jamestown. Nicolau stopped the run with a clutch jumper for his 10
th point of the game to push the lead out to 68-59. A Hodge trey made it a 5-0 run for the Golden Eagles to push the advantage to 71-59 for Minnesota Crookston.
Jamestown came right back with a 5-0 run of their own spearheaded by an Oberweiser three from the wing to bring the deficit down to 71-64 with 9:59 left in the game. The Jimmies moved the run to 9-0 with baskets from Purintun and Talley to cut the lead to 71-68 with 7:54 remaining. Jamestown continued their run, moving it 13-0 and taking the lead 72-71 with made buckets from Birch and Purintun.
Knickerbocker would finally stop the big run for the Jimmies with a jumper, putting the Golden Eagles back up 73-72. Jamestown responded with a Birch bucket to take the lead back at 74-73. Cleary responded with two free throws to give Minnesota Crookston the lead back at 75-74. Johnson bounced right back for the Jimmies with a three-pointer to put Jamestown up 77-75. The Golden Eagles responded with a 6-0 run with baskets from Cleary and Knickerbocker and a pair of free throws from Smith to give them the lead back at 81-77 with 3:13 left in the game.
Another triple from Johnson, his fourth of the game, pulled the Jimmies back within 81-80 on the next possession. Minnesota Crookston staved off Jamestown for the moment with a pull-up jumper from Cleary for his 34
th point of the game to make it 83-80. However, Birch responded with an old-fashioned three-point play to knot the game up 83-83 with 2:30 left in the game.
Johnson's fifth triple of the game put Jamestown ahead 86-83 with 1:30 remaining in the game. The Golden Eagles pulled back within 86-85 as Cleary connected on a pair of free throws with 39.5 seconds left in the game.
With just 0.4 seconds remaining, Jamestown would get a steal off of Cleary. A pair of Dobson free throws would put the Jimmies up 87-85 with 0.1 seconds remaining, the tally they would win by.
Minnesota Crookston will open up conference play Sat., Nov. 25 at 3 p.m. against Bemidji State University.
