Box Score Crookston, Minn.- The Golden Eagle soccer team celebrated their 2017 senior class and had one of their best offensive efforts of the season, Sunday afternoon, but an opening goal wasn't enough as they tied Wayne State College 1-1.
A pair of seniors got Crookston on the board just over four minutes into the game when defender
Maggie Gibbons (Cohasset, Minn.) put a corner kick into the middle of the box that was headed into the back of the net by midfielder
Ellie Brettschneider (Lakeville, Minn.). The goal was Brettschneider's first of the season and Gibbons picked up her second assist of the 2017 campaign.
The Wildcats outshot the Golden Eagles, 16-7, but the Crookston side had the better chances throughout the double overtime match. For the second straight day, Crookston's sophomore goalkeeper
Olivia Puttin (Rogers, Minn.) put in a quality efforts to go along with a strong defensive unit in front of her. The only Wayne score came in the 26
th minute as Brooke Buzzell (Monument, Colo.) finished off a scramble in front of the UM Crookston net. The goal was the junior midfielder's third of the season.
Both teams had solid opportunities through the two bonus periods with the Wildcats having the edge on shots 4-2 in overtime. The 1-1 final sets the Golden Eagles season record at 0-11-2, 0-9-2 in conference play while Wayne State sits at 3-6-5, 2-5-4 in conference.
The Golden Eagles will hit the road for their next three matches, the first at Southwest Minnesota State University on Saturday. Opening kick in Marshall, Minn. is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
