Box Score ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston volleyball team tested No. 3 Concordia University-St. Paul in the final two sets, but ultimately fell 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-19). The match was played at the Gangelhoff Center Sat., Oct. 14 in St. Paul, Minn.
Minnesota Crookston falls to 4-15 (1-10 NSIC) with Saturday's loss. Concordia-St. Paul, the defending NCAA Division II National Champion, improved to 17-2 (10-1 NSIC) with the victory.
The Golden Eagles looked to one of the best games of the season from newcomer
Deaira Gresham (Fr., OH, Maplewood, Minn.). Gresham notched nine kills and hit .227 for the match.
Kassi Green (R-Sr., OH, Anoka, Minn.) added seven kills.
Kelci Green (R-Sr., MH, Anoka, Minn.) and
Callie Schapekahm (Jr., MH, Eagan, Minn.) each finished with five kills.
Kaycie Hagen (Sr., S, Savage, Minn.) paced the team with 26 assists on the match.
Defensively, Minnesota Crookston finished with 58 digs led by 11 from
Becca Vandenheuvel (Sr., DS, Cannon Falls, Minn.) and 10 from Hagen. The Golden Eagle block was led by four block assists from Schapekahm.
Minnesota Crookston hit .182 on the match with 31 kills and 13 errors.
The Golden Bears looked to 15 kills from Hope Schiller, who hit .429 for the match. Shelby Seurer added 11 kills and hit .207, while Mariya Sampson added eight kills. Elizabeth Mohr led the team with 46 assists. Concordia-St. Paul finished the match hitting .300 with 53 kills and 14 errors.
Defensively, Concordia-St. Paul looked to 21 digs from Tori Hanson. Erin Fallert added 11 digs. On the block, the Golden Bears looked to block assists from Sampson and Shelby Book.
Concordia-St. Paul raced out to an early 9-2 lead after a kill from Schiller. They built on the early momentum to take the 25-13 set one victory.
Minnesota Crookston got out to the 3-1 lead in set two following a Gresham kill.
The Golden Eagles would build their lead to 9-6 on a Perrel kill. However, Concordia-St. Paul used a 6-1 run to go ahead 12-10 with a Sampson kill. The Golden Bears moved their lead to 18-14 with a Hagen attack error. The Golden Bears pulled back within 23-19 on a Schapekahm kill. However, Concordia-St. Paul would take two of the final three points to win 25-20 and go ahead 2-0.
The Golden Bears used a 7-4 run at the end of the third set to take the win 25-19 in the set and 3-0 in the match.
Minnesota Crookston returns home to face Minnesota State University Moorhead Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. at Lysaker Gymnasium.
