Perrel Powers Minnesota Crookston to 3-0 Sweep of West Virginia State

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – Maggie Perrel (R-Jr., OH, New Germany, Minn.) had 15 kills and hit .353 for the match as she led the University of Minnesota Crookston volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 26-24) sweep of West Virginia State University. The Golden Eagles were down in the third set but came back led by four kills from Perrel at the end to pick up the sweep. UMC ends the Ferris State University Invitational with a 2-2 mark.

Along with Perrel, Callie Schapekahm (So., MH, Eagan, Minn.) added eight kills and hit .667 from middle hitter. Alyssa Muelken (Jr., MH, Savage, Minn.) chipped in seven kills.

Sierra Trost (Sr., S, Ham Lake, Minn.) paced the Golden Eagles with 24 assists as UMC hit .284 for the match. Defensively, Trost led the way with eight digs, while Perrel added seven. On the block, Muelken paced UMC with four block assists.

West Virginia State was led by seven kills from Edwina Barnett. Rebekah Baldwin and Brenna Barker each had six kills apiece. Barker finished with 18 assists.

Defensively, Brooke Cieslewski led the Yellow Jackets with 14 digs, while Barnett led the block with one solo block and two block assists.

UMC would get out to a 6-3 advantage on West Virginia State after a Perrel kill. The Yellow Jackets would knot it up at 7-7 after a Samantha Scripter block. The Golden Eagles would fall behind 10-8 soon after, but would knot the set back up at 10-10 following a Scripter attack error. The Golden Eagles would take the lead back at 11-10 following a strong serve from Trost that dropped for a service ace.

Minnesota Crookston would extend their advantage in the first set to 17-11. The Yellow Jackets would pull within 20-16 but UMC would be able to hold their foes off. The Golden Eagles would take the set 25-19 on a block from Sabrina Leuer (So., RS, Hamel, Minn.) and Muelken.

Minnesota Crookston and West Virginia State would be knotted up 5-5 early in the second set. The Golden Eagles would then be able to get out to a 7-5 lead after a pair of Yellow Jacket errors. UMC would extend their advantage to 17-12 on a Perrel kill, which was followed by a West Virginia State attack error.

The Yellow Jackets would get within 19-16 but the Golden Eagles would be able to stave them off. UMC would take the second frame 25-19 after an Emma Melander (R-Fr., OH, Victoria, Minn.) service ace.

Minnesota Crookston was led in the first two sets by Perrel with five kills. Trost paced the offense with 12 kills, as they hit .290 as a team.

Defensively, UMC looked to three digs apiece from Trost and Perrel. On the block, Muelken led the way with two block assists.

West Virginia State looked to four kills from Mallory Rennard. Brenna Barker led the Yellow Jackets with six assists, while Brook Cieslewski had four digs.

The Golden Eagles would get out to a 6-5 advantage early on in the third set over the Yellow Jackets. West Virginia State would be able to knot it up at 11-11 and they would get the lead and extend it to 16-11 on a Barker service ace.

Minnesota Crookston would get within 18-16 after a Cashman service ace. The Golden Eagles would get within 19-18 after a West Virginia State service error. UMC would be able to knot it up at 23-23 with a kill from Perrel. West Virginia State would come back and get the Golden Eagles down to set point at 24-23 but Perrel again responded with a big kill. The Golden Eagles would be able to make their comeback complete with another kill from Perrel.

UMC will return to action Fri., Sept. 9 against Bemidji State University at the University of Sioux Falls Tournament in Sioux Falls, S.D.
