GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The University of Minnesota Crookston played with Division I University of North Dakota until the final pitch but fell on a walk-off single by Hayden May to drive in Connor Trygstad. The Golden Eagles fell 10-9 to the Fighting Hawks. Minnesota Crookston falls to 22-14 on the season, while North Dakota improves to 6-25. The game was played at Kraft Memorial Field in Grand Forks, N.D.
Minnesota Crookston was led by
Riley Thompson (So., OF, Owatonna, Minn.), who went 3-of-4 with one RBI and three runs scored.
Colton Haight (Sr., C/OF, Rogers, Minn.) went 2-of-4 with one RBI, while
Ryan Haggstrom (Sr., 1B, Apple Valley, Minn.) was 1-0f-4 with two RBI's and one run scored and
Kenny Perez (Sr., DH/1B, Orlando, Fla.) was 2-of-5 with one RBI and one run scored.
North Dakota would take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Ben Reznicek to drive in Hunter Walsh.
The Fighting Hawks would have a big second inning. UND's Reznicek would come through as he doubled down the left field line to drive in Hayden May.
North Dakota would add to their lead as Miles Lewis singled to right field to drive in Reznicek and Cooper Maas to make it 4-0.
The Golden Eagles would cut their lead to 4-1 in the third when
Jason Angelo (So., 3B, Manteca, Calif.) hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Thompson, who had tripled.
Minnesota Crookston would come through with a big inning in the fifth as they got to relief pitcher Riley Pelischek.
With the bases loaded, UND would pull Pelischek in favor of Henry Berning. He would give up a sacrifice fly to Haggstrom to drive in Thompson. Perez then hit a single to center to drive in Mushitz.
Colton Haight (Sr., C/OF, Rogers, Minn.) would continue the onslaught for the Golden Eagles as he smashed a double to center to plate Perez to make it 5-4. UND would be able to get out of the frame.
The Golden Eagles would add four runs in the sixth off of reliever Austin Crank. Thompson would get his third hit of the day to drive in Kinsella and make it 6-4. Haggstrom would hit a ball to third base and would beat out the throw to drive in Thompson to extend their advantage to 7-4. Perez would chase Crank as he reached on a dropped third strike and the runners would score on an error by May at catcher as he sailed the ball past first. The Golden Eagles would lead 9-4 at the end of the frame.
UND would put two on with no outs but
Colt Trebesch (Sr., RHP/3B, Glencoe, Minn.) would pitch out of trouble to keep the lead at 9-4.
The Fighting Hawks would get their first run of the day off Trebesch when Walsh singled to drive in Reznicek to cut the lead to 9-5. After getting to Trebesch, Brett Harrison would clear the bases with a double to cut the advantage to 9-8 with
Matthew Dallas (Jr., RHP, Boise, Idaho) on the mound. UND would tie up the game 9-9 as Harrison scored on a ground out.
UND would strand a runner at second in the eighth but Angelo would make a good play on a ball at third to get UMC out of any further trouble as the score remained 9-9 going into the top of the ninth.
Perez would lead off the ninth with an infield hit as he tried to start the rally for the Golden Eagles.
Jeremy Spinner (So., IF, Phoenix, Ariz.) would come on to pinch run for Perez. The Fighting Hawks would move Ellery Bresnahan pitcher to try to get out of trouble.
Reed Hjelle (Fr., OF/1B, East Grand Forks, Minn.) would single to left to move Spinner over to second. However, Kinsella would strike out and Spinner would be thrown out stealing at third as the game remained tied at 9-9.
UND would take the game in the bottom of the ninth with a walk-off win as May hit a single to drive in Connor Trygstad as the Fighting Hawks won 10-9.
Zac Carrillo (Jr., RHP, Manteca, Calif.) would suffer the loss after giving up one run on two hits.
The win for UND went to Bresnahan, who gave up no runs on one hit in the ninth.
Minnesota Crookston will take on Augustana University on Wed.,April 27 at 1:30 and 4 p.m.
