Masterful Pitching from Nelson and Wahlberg Guide Golden Eagles to Series Sweep of U-Mary

BISMARCK, N.D. – The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team knocked off another first in a season of breaking records. The Golden Eagles picked up their first sweep of a four-game series with wins of 4-2 and 5-2 over the Marauders. The games were played at Municipal Ballpark in Bismarck, N.D.

Minnesota Crookston improves to 22-13 on the season with the pair of wins. The Golden Eagles are now 15-6 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) standings, as they are alone in fourth place in the conference standings. UMC heads into the final eight games of the conference slate as they look to find a place in the NSIC Baseball Tournament, which will be played May 11-14 at the Municipal Baseball Complex in St. Cloud, Minn.

U-Mary falls to 6-30 (4-19) NSIC with the pair of losses.

The Golden Eagles picked up their third come from behind victory of the season with the 4-2 win in game one. UMC was down 2-1 heading into the fifth inning. That is when Jason Angelo (So., 3B, Manteca, Calif.) would hit a double down the left field line to drive in Riley Thompson (So., OF, Owatonna, Minn.) to knot up the game 2-2. Kenny Perez (Sr., DH/1B, Orlando, Fla.) would come through with the go-ahead swing as he singled through the left side to drive in Ethan Mushitz (So., SS, East Grand Forks, Minn.).

Minnesota Crookston starter Jarad Nelson (Sr., RHP, Karlstad, Minn.) put together his third-straight great start as the senior gave up just three hits and no earned runs with three strikeouts in a complete seven-inning game. The win was Nelson's fifth of the season.

The UMC bats were led in game one by Reed Hjelle (Fr., OF/1B, East Grand Forks, Minn.), who went 3-of-3. Mushitz was 2-of-4 with one run scored, while Perez was 2-of-3 with one RBI and one run scored.

In game two, the Golden Eagles were led by a great game on the bump from Nolan Wahlberg (Sr., RHP, Blaine, Minn.). Wahlberg picked up his conference-leading eighth win as he gave up two runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts to earn the win.

Minnesota Crookston was led in game two by the bat of Angelo, who was 2-of-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored. Colton Haight (Sr., C/OF, Rogers, Minn.) would go 2-of-3 with two RBI's and one run scored.

U-Mary jumped on the score board first in the first inning as Nelson ran into a little trouble out of the gate. With the bases loaded he would walk Connor Doll to score Tom Imholte. With the bases still loaded, Nelson hit Mason Schiff by a pitch to score Jason Shaul to make it 2-0. Nelson would pitch out of trouble to keep the score at that.

UMC would cut the lead to 2-1 as Perez scored in the second when Thomas Kinsella (Sr., 2B, North Branch, Minn.) grounded into a double play.
Nobody else would score until the fifth when Angelo and Perez came through for the Golden Eagles to put UMC up 3-2.

The Golden Eagles added a security run in the seventh as Haight hit the ball to center to score Mushitz to make it 4-2. UMC would come through with the 4-2 win.

The loss for the Marauders would go to Brad Meyer, who gave up three earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts in six innings.

UMC would jump out to the early lead in game two. Angelo would through again with a single to center field to drive in Thompson to make it 1-0. Haggstrom would then come through with a double to left field to plate Angelo to extend the advantage to 2-0.

The Golden Eagles would extend their lead to 4-0 in the fourth when Haight hit his third home run in the last 12 games as he drove one to left center.
The Marauders would be able to cut the lead to 4-1 in the fourth as Drew Feuerbach doubled to drive in Doll.

U-Mary would make it 4-2 in the eighth as Will Pettener hit an infield single to drive in Doll.

The Golden Eagles added a security run in the ninth as Angelo hit his second long ball of the season to make it 5-2, the score UMC would win by.

The loss for the Marauders went to Charles Bielejeski, who gave up four earned runs on four hits in three innings.

Minnesota Crookston will face-off with the No. 1 team in the conference on Wed., April 27 at UMC Baseball Field as they take on Augustana University. The Golden Eagles will play a single-nine non-conference game against University of North Dakota Tues., April 26 at 4 p.m. in Grand Forks, N.D.
