BISMARCK, N.D. – The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team picked up a sweep of University of Mary as they came back for a pair of wins, 5-3 and 13-11. The wins pushed the Golden Eagles to a 20-13 (13-6 NSIC) mark on the season. Their 20
thwin marks the first time in school history that the Golden Eagles have reached 20 wins. It is also the most wins the team has ever had in program history. Their previous-high was 14 in the 2015 season.
Minnesota Crookston is sitting fourth place with a 14-6 mark. U-Mary falls to 6-29 (4-18 NSIC) with their pair of losses.
In game one, a
Reed Hjelle (Fr., OF/1B, East Grand Forks, Minn.) double in the seventh inning to drive in
Ryan Haggstrom (Sr., 1B/RHP, Apple Valley, Minn.) and
Jason Angelo (So., 3B, Manteca, Calif.) would catapult UMC to the 5-3 win.
Luke Thoma (Sr., RHP, Little Falls, Minn.) put the Golden Eagles in position to win after a quality start, giving up just three earned runs on five hits with one strikeout.
The win went to
Cody Pamperin (Jr., RHP, Shakopee, Minn.), who picked up his first win of the season after going one inning and giving up one earned run on one hit with one strikeout.
The save went to
Zach Seipel (Fr., RHP, Eagan, Minn.), who picked up his eighth save of the season in game one.
Minnesota Crookston was led in game one by Hjelle, who was 3-of-4 with two RBI's and one run scored.
In game two,
Trevor Buttermore (Sr., RHP, North St. Paul, Minn.) got the start and would go 4.2 innings and give up two earned runs on six hits with one strikeout.
The win would go to
Nate Albrecht (Fr., LHP, Wahpeton, N.D.) would get the first win of his career after going 0.2 innings and giving up no earned runs and one strikeout.
The Golden Eagles also got a strong pitching performance out of the bullpen by
Colt Trebesch (Sr., RHP/3B, Glencoe, Minn.), who went 1.2 innings and gave up no runs on one hit.
Seipel would pick up his ninth save of the year, which leads the NSIC. Seipel would give up one earned run on three hits.
The Golden Eagles would come back in game two after being down 7-2 going into the sixth inning.
Thomas Kinsella (Sr., 2B, North Branch, Minn.) started the comeback as he reached on a fielding error, which allowed
Colton Haight (Sr., C/OF, Rogers, Minn.) and
Kenny Perez (Sr., DH/1B, Orlando, Fla.) to score.
Zach Frazier would then come through with a single to drive in Hjelle to cut the deficit to 7-5. An
Ethan Mushitz (So., SS, East Grand Forks, Minn.) single would then drive in Kinsella to cut the lead to 7-6.
The tying run would come through when Angelo hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Frazier. Haggstrom would come through with a single to drive in the go-ahead run, Mushitz, to make it 8-7. Perez would then come through with a two-run home run to put the Golden Eagles up 10-7, which would be the score to end the sixth inning.
U-Mary would make it interesting in game two. Drew Feuerbach hit a three-run home run to cut the lead to 13-10. Brad Meyer would then single to drive in Seth Meide to cut the lead to 13-11. That is when Seipel would gain control and strike out the final two batters as the Golden Eagles would hang on for the win.
The loss for U-Mary went to Travis Stevens, who gave up six earned runs on four hits in 0.2 innings pitched.
Minnesota Crookston was led by Perez, who was 3-of-5 with a home run, three RBI's and two runs scored. Mushitz would go 4-of-6 with one RBI and one run scored. Kinsella went 2-of-5 with four RBI's and one run scored. Haggstrom would go 2-of-4 with one RBI and three runs scored.
The Golden Eagles will look to pick up the series win with a pair of games Sat., April 23 against U-Mary. The games will be played at 12 and 2:30 p.m. at Municipal Ballpark in Bismarck, N.D.
UMC is down to 10 games in NSIC play as they look to fight for a spot in the NSIC playoffs. The Golden Eagles have two games against U-Mary, two against Augustana University, two against Minot State University and four versus Northern State University.
