FAYETTE, Iowa – The University of Minnesota Crookston softball team fell 11-1 and 6-0 to Winona State University Sat., March 26 at Eischeid Softball Complex in Fayette, Iowa. The games were relocated to Fayette, Iowa after Winona, Minn., was hit by a snow storm earlier this week.
The Golden Eagles fall to 6-18 (0-4 NSIC) with the pair of losses, while the Warriors improved to 21-7 (3-2 NSIC) with the victories.
UMC hung in game two early as they were down just 3-0 to Winona State in the fifth but a Jamee Schleis three-run home run in the sixth would put the Warriors up 6-0, a lead they would hold on to.
The Golden Eagles were led in game two by
Jozie Garner (Jr., OF, Eureka, Kan.) went 1-of-3, while
Allison Foley (Sr., SS, Lockport, Ill.) was also 1-of-3 on the day.
In game one, UMC looked to
Victoria Bayliss (So., 2B, West Bloomfield, Mich.), who was 2-of-3, while Garner was 1-of-3 and
Gabriel Antolak (So., 3B/C, Zimmerman, Minn.) went 2-of-2 with one RBI.
Winona State would score two in the first inning of game one to take a quick 2-0 advantage. Keegan would single through the right side to drive in Reed Karsten. Paige Keegan would then come across on a Mariah Schultz ground out.
The Warriors added two in the second. An Allyson O'Herron singled and then Schleis came across on an error to make it 3-0. Karsten would double later in the inning to drive in O'Herron.
UMC got one run back in the third to cut it to 4-1 as Antolak singled to left to drive in Bayliss.
The Warriors would get three runs in the third led by a Chelsey Rodenkirch triple to drive in Schultz.
Winona State would add 4 more runs in the fourth to solidify their 11-1 victory.
The win for the Warriors would go to Hanna Lythberg, who went five innings and gave up one run on four hits.
The loss for UMC went to
Heather Cunningham (So., RHP, Jackonsville, Fla.), who gave up six earned runs on 10 hits.
In game two, Winona State would take the early 1-0 advantage in the second when O'Herron singled and then McKenna Larsen crossed on an error by the right fielder.
The Warriors would add a run in the third when Lani Van Zyl hit a home run to left center.
Winona State would hit another one over the fence in the fifth, this time from Karsten to make it 3-0.
The Golden Eagles would hold the lead at 3-0 until the sixth when Schleis hit a three-run home run to drive in Karsten and Natalie Kalmes.
Minnesota Crookston's
Bailey Braatz (Jr., RHP, Buffalo, Minn.) got the loss after going 5.1 innings and giving up six earned runs on nine hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
The win for Winona State went to Alex Walker, who pitched seven innings and gave up no runs on two hits.
