Pitching Leads Upper Iowa Past Minnesota Crookston 9-0 and 8-0

FAYETTE, Iowa – The University of Minnesota Crookston softball team fell 9-0 and 8-0 to Upper Iowa University at Eischeid Softball Complex in Fayette, Iowa. The Golden Eagles fall to 6-16 (0-2 NSIC) on the season. The Peacocks improve to 17-9 (3-1 NSIC).

The story of the day for Upper Iowa was their pitching as they limited the UMC bats to just three hits on the day. The Peacocks got a strong performance out of Brooke Redmond, who went five innings and pitched a two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts. Jacqueline Flood would get the game one win in a one-hit shutout against the Golden Eagles with six strikeouts.

The lone hit in game one for UMC came from Brooke Timmins (Sr., C/DH, Magnolia, Texas).

Upper Iowa would get on the board first in the first inning when Walls hit a single to center to drive in Riley Kruel. Tara Duran would then double to right center to drive in two, with Tara Walls and Jenny Budds scoring. The Peacocks would complete a big first inning as Lauren Marlinghaus scored on a wild pitch.

Upper Iowa would add a run in the third when Katie Sammons hit a two-run home run to put the Peacocks up 6-0.

The Peacocks would put a stamp on things with three runs in the fourth. Flood would double to drive in Kruel. Walls then doubled to drive in Flood and Marlinghaus singled to drive in Walls.

Mikayla Jones (Fr., RHP, Huxley, Iowa) would get the game one start and go four innings, giving up five earned runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts.

In game two, UMC got hits from Alexis Khoshaba (Sr., OF, Richmond, British Columbia) and Sammy Kuhlow (So., DP/1B, Big Lake, Minn.).

The Peacocks got on the board first when Walls singled to drive in Sami Kay Shafranski.

Upper Iowa added a run in the second when Kruel doubled to left to plate Duran.

In the third, Marlinghaus would single to drive in Flood to make it 3-0.

The Peacocks added a run when Sammons hit a solo home run to make it 4-0. Erica Kirgan's sacrifice fly would plate Sammy Garrett. Walls would then double down the line to drive in Flood and Shafranski.

The Peacocks would add the final run in the fifth as Kruel singled to center to drive in Sammons.

Bailey Braatz (Jr., RHP, Buffalo, MInn.) got the start in the circle for UMC. She would give up five earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts.

The Golden Eagles will take on Winona State University at 3 and 5 p.m. at Eischeid Softball Complex in Fayette, Iowa.
