Box Score SAINT LEO, Fla. – The University of Minnesota Crookston pitchers couldn't keep Saint Leo University's bats at bay as they fell 19-15 Tues., March 15 at Thomas Southard Stadium. UMC put up a fight as they got nine runs in the ninth inning but it would not be enough. The Golden Eagles took a 6-0 lead but gave up 10 runs between the second and the third as UMC fell to 5-7 on the season. Saint Leo improved to 13-10 on the season with the victory. UMC moves to 2-2 so far on their trip to Florida.
Minnesota Crookston was led on the game by
Kenny Perez (Sr., DH/1B, Orlando, Fla.) who went 2-of-5 with two RBI's and one run scored, including a home run.
Patrick Higgins (Jr., OF, Eagan, Minn.) went 2-of-4 with one run scored and one RBI.
Jason Angelo (So., IF, Manteca, Calif.) went 1-of-4 with two RBI's on the game.
Skyler Carlson (Jr., LHP, Thompson, N.D.) got the start and would give up five earned runs on five hits.
Zac Carrillo (Jr., RHP, Manteca, Calif.) would get the loss after going 0.2 innings and giving up four earned runs on two hits with two walks. Carrillo falls to 0-2 on the season.
The win for Saint Leo goes to Zach Whitaker, who came in and shut UMC down in relief. Whitaker went five innings and gave up no runs on five hits with five strikeouts.
The Golden Eales would get on the board first in the top of the first when
Kenny Perez (Sr., DH/1B, Orlando, Fla.) powered one over the center field fence to drive in himself and
Ryan Haggstrom (Sr., 1B/RHP, Apple Valley, Minn.) to give UMC the 2-0 advantage.
Minnesota Crookston would add four in the top of the second. With the bases loaded,
Patrick Higgins (Jr., OF, Eagan, Minn.) would single to drive in
Reed Hjelle (Fr., 1B/OF, East Grand Forks, Minn.).
Jason Angelo (So., IF, Manteca, Calif.) then came through in the clutch with a double to left field to drive in
Mitchell Bornhauser (So., OF, Northfield, Minn.) and Kinsella to extend the lead to 5-0. Haggstrom would hit a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Higgins.
The Lions would respond in the bottom of the second getting to Carlson. Derek Gibree started things out with a sacrifice fly to drive in Alex Mata to cut the lead to 5-1. Bryan Nunez then singled to drive in Zach Daley. Lane Stancil would then come through with a three-run blast over the right field job to drive in himself, Nunez and Zack Sabo.
Zac Carillo (Jr., RHP, Manteca, Calif) would come on in relief but would be chase as Gibree hit a two-RBI single to give Saint Leo the 6-5 advantage.
Aaron Hollcraft (Fr., LHP, Crookston, Minn.) would come on in relief of Carrillo. Stancil would get a double off Hollcraft to drive in Nunez and Sabo. The Lion onslaught would end in the third when Chase Turner flied out to right field to drive in Stancil to make it 10-6.
Hollcraft would give up a double to Mata in the fourth, which drove in Mike Mann. He would get out of the inning with two strikeouts as Saint Leo continued to lead 11-6.
The Lions would chase Hollcraft from the game beginning with a Turner home run to center field to make it 12-6. Mata then doubled to left field to plate Troy Sieber and make it 12-6.
Marcus Campbell (Sr., RHP, St. Croix Falls, Wis.) would then come on in relief. The Lions would get one to cross as Mann scored on a Daley ground out. Campbell would get UMC out of the inning by getting a Gibree lineout as Saint Leo left the inning leading 14-6.
Campbell would shut down the Lions in the sixth by getting Saint Leo to go down in order.
He would be pulled in the seventh for
Nate Albrecht (Fr., LHP, Wahpeton, N.D.). He would give up a two-run home run to Mata to drive in himself and Shane Williams.
The Saint Leo Lions would look to solidify their win with three runs in the eighth to make it 19-6.
However, Saint Leo reliever Edwin Suarez would run into trouble.
David Olson (Jr., C, Stillwater, Minn.) would cross first on a Suarez wild pitch.
Mitchell Bornhauser (So., OF, Northfield, Minn.) would then hit an infield single to drive in
Timothy Scott, Jr. (Sr., OF, Macon, Ga.) to make it 19-8. Amerson would cross on an error by the catcher to make it 19-9.
After loading the bases again, Saint Leo would pull Suarez for Brett Coffel. Haggstrom would hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Bornhauser to make it 19-10. UMC would continue to cut into the lead as Perez would hit a single to center to drive in
Colt Trebesch (Sr., IF, Glencoe, Minn.). One more run would cross as Scott would be hit and
Jeremy Spinner (So., IF, Phoenix, Ariz.) scored to cut the lead to 19-12.
Patrick Amerson (Jr., IF, Eloy, Ariz.) would hit a double to left field on in an in between ball as he drove in Olson, Perez and Scott to clear the bases and cut the lead to 19-15. Coffel would get the final out on a Bornhauser fly ball to get out of the inning.
The Golden Eagles will have an off day before returning to action Thurs., March 16 against Bentley University at 9 a.m. C.T. at Jack Russell Memorial Stadium.
