UMC Men's Basketball Falls to No. 4 Augustana 91-57 to End Season

CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston men's basketball team saw their season come to a close with a 91-57 loss to No. 4 Augustana University Wed., Feb. 24 at Sioux Falls Arena in Sioux Falls, S.D. The game was played in the first round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament.

Minnesota Crookston was led by a great final performance from their lone senior Derrick Redd, Jr. (Sr., G, Menifee, Calif./Sports and Rec Management). Redd had 17 points on 7-of-16 from the field and 3-of-5 from beyond the arc.

With his 17 points, Redd surpassed Jon Smith for No. 3 all-time on the scoring charts. He ends his career with 907 points, joining Joe Hasz and Akeem Cubie as the only three players to ever score over 900 points in a Golden Eagle uniform.

The Golden Eagles end their season with a 3-24 mark, while Augustana moves on to play in the quarterfinals of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament.

In addition to Redd, Nate Lorenz (Fr., F, Breckenridge, Minn./Health Science) had another strong game off the bench with eight points and six boards. Chase Knickerbocker (Fr., G, Annandale, Minn./Business Finance) also played one of the best games of his young career with eight points, while Xavier Hall (Jr., G, Woodbury, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) added seven points. Kobe Critchley (Fr., G, Roseville, Minn./Health Science) had five assists on the evening.

The Golden Eagles were 23-of-67 for 34.3 percent from the field and 8-of-30 for 26.7 percent from beyond the arc.

Augustana was led by one of the nation's top players Daniel Jansen, who was 11-of-15 from the field for 24 points. Zach Huisken came off the bench for 17 points, while Alex Richter had 13 points.

The Vikings were 36-of-60 for 60 percent from the field, 11-of-20 for 55 percent from beyond the arc and 8-of-16 for 50 percent from the charity stripe.

The Golden Eagles had Augustana within five (16-11) with 11:53 left in the first half after a Hall lay-up. However, the Vikings would be able to get their lead up to 13 led by three-pointers from Tanner Odegaard and Huisken. The Vikings would finish the first half on a 32-14 run to lead 48-25 at the break.

Minnesota Crookston would get as close as 18 (64-48) in the second half after a Hall three, but the Vikings would be able to go another run to hold off the Golden Eagles and win 91-57.

UMC finishes a tough season, but has a lot of optimism on the horizon with only one senior set to graduate. The Golden Eagles are set to return 13 players to the roster including a core of freshman who continued to show improvement throughout the season. In addition, the Golden Eagles will look to supplement a solid core with recruits as they round out their 2016-17 roster, which will be Head Coach Dan Weisse's third season leading the ship in Crookston.
