Box Score MOORHEAD, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston men's basketball team fell 80-46 to No. 10 Minnesota State University Moorhead Sat., Feb. 20 at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.
"They are a very good basketball team," said Head Coach
Dan Weisse. "They made shots and we didn't make shots to keep it pretty simple. They do that to everybody. I thought overall we got looks, our offense was running, but you have to hit shots. They are the NSIC North division champs for a reason."
Minnesota Crookston falls to 3-23 (1-21 NSIC) with the loss, while MSU Moorhead won the NSIC North with a 28-4 (20-3 NSIC) mark. The Golden Eagles will go to Augustana University for the first round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament Wed., Feb. 24 at 8 p.m. at the Sioux Falls Arena.
"Every game is an opportunity to keep getting better," Weisse said. "We have another opportunity to do that. We have to just take advantage of that. The season is not over."
Kobe Critchley (Fr., G, Roseville, Minn./Health Science) led the way with eight points and three assists.
Xavier Hall (Jr., G, Woodbury, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) came off the bench for six points, while
Nate Lorenz (Fr., F, Breckenridge, Minn./Health Science) had eight points and six boards off the bench.
Derrick Redd, Jr. (Sr., G, Menifee, Calif./Sports and Rec Management) finished with four points. He needs just three to move past Jon Smith for No. 3 all-time. He is also just 11 points from surpassing 900 points, joining Joe Hasz and Akeem Cubie as the only Golden Eagle players to do so.
The Golden Eagles were 18-of-61 for 29.5 percent from the field. They struggled from beyond the arc, going 1-of-20 for 5 percent. The Golden Eagles were a perfect 9-of-9 from the charity stripe.
MSU Moorhead was led by potentially the best player in the NSIC North, Isaac Sevlie, who had a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds. Tyler Vaughan chipped in 12 points, while Tanner Kretchman had 11 points and five assists. Addison Park came off the bench for 10 points and seven boards.
The Dragons were 32-of-61 for 52.5 percent from the field. In addition, they were 7-of-17 for 41.2 percent from beyond the arc. They struggled from the charity stripe, going 9-of-18 for 50 percent.
The Golden Eagles would be knotted up with the Dragons early 7-7 after Redd hit a bucket. However, from there the Dragons would out-score the Golden Eagles 40-14 from there to go into the break up 47-21 on Minnesota Crookston.
Minnesota Crookston looked to four points from
Xavier Hall (Jr., G, Woodbury, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) and
Riley Rice (Jr., F, Mullen, Neb./Sports and Rec Management). The Golden Eagles were 7-of-25 for 28 percent from the field and just 1-of-10 for 10 percent from beyond the arc.
MSU Moorhead was led by 13 first-half points from their leading scorer on the season Isaac Sevlie. Tyler Vaughan added eight points, while Tanner Kretchman had seven, while Evan Holt came off the bench for seven, as well.
The Dragons were 19-of-30 for 63.3 percent from the field and 4-of-8 for 62.5 percent from beyond the arc. They struggled from the charity stripe, going just 4-of-9 for 44.4 percent.
UMC was out-scored 33 to 25 in the second half as they held their own for the majority of the second half, but the first half was enough to take down the Golden Eagles 80-46.
The Golden Eagles will be the No. 8 seed in the NSIC North and will take on No. 1 seed in the NSIC South Augustana University on Wednesday.
