CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston went point-for-point with No. 6 Winona State University for the majority of the match but ultimately fell 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 25-20, 25-22). The Golden Eagles would win the second set and would have leads in the third and fourth set late, but Winona State would be able to come through with key plays in big moments to come away with the win.
Minnesota Crookston falls to 10-16 (6-12 NSIC) with Saturday's loss. Winona State improved to 24-3 (15-3 NSIC) with the win.
The Golden Eagles were led on the night by the play of their seniors.
Kali Erickson (Sr., OH, Fargo, N.D.) would finish with 11 kills and hit .143 on the night.
Sierra Trost (Sr., S, Ham Lake, Minn.) had a double-double with 36 assists and 15 digs. She also added five block assists.
Casey Cashman (Sr., Lib., Ashland, Wis.) would finish with 20 digs as she earned the start on Senior Night for Minnesota Crookston.
In addition to the seniors,
Kelci Green (R-Jr., MH, Anoka, Minn.) had 10 kills and hit .474 for the match.
Kassi Green (R-Jr., OH, Anoka, Minn.) would add 14 kills and hit .032 with 12 errors on the night.
The Golden Eagles would hit .132 for the match with 47 kills and 27 errors.
In addition to Cashman's performance defensively, Trost added 15 digs.
Becca Vandenheuvel (Jr., DS, Cannon Falls, Minn.) and
Kaycie Hagen (Jr., DS, Savage, Minn.) would each have 11 digs, and
Kassi Green would have 10 digs.
On the block, UMC finished with 11 total blocks.
Kelci Green led the way with six block assists and two solo blocks, while Trost had five block assists.
Winona State looked to Lauren Kudronowicz with 12 kills and a .286 hitting percentage. She also had four block assists. UMC would make things tough for outside hitter Taylor Goar, who had 10 kills, but hit just .048 on the night.
At setter, McKenna Larsen would finish with 33 assists as she led the Warriors to 46 kills and 23 errors as they hit .152 for the match.
Defensively, Jamie Cairncross gave a strong performance at libero as she put up 29 digs on the night. On the block, Kudronowicz and Maria Fruechte each had four block assists.
The Golden Eagle seniors of Cashman, Erickson and Trost were honored before the game. They have each had strong careers and have helped Minnesota Crookston to 44 wins so far in their careers. They were also part of the 2013 NSIC Volleyball Tournament berth.
Minnesota Crookston will wrap up the season on the road. The Golden Eagles will take on No. 1 Concordia University-St. Paul Fri., Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. and Minnesota State University-Mankato Sat., Nov. 12 at 4 p.m.
