CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston volleyball team took three-consecutive sets as they came back down 1-0 to upend Upper Iowa University, 3-1 (19-25. 25-20, 25-15, 25-22). The Golden Eagles snap a four-match losing streak with the win and split the season series with the Peacocks 1-1. The UMC volleyball team is now alone in 10th place in the NSIC after Friday's win over Upper Iowa.
Minnesota Crookston was led by 22 kills from
Maggie Perrel (R-Jr., OH, New Germany, Minn.) and
Sierra Trost (Sr., S, Ham Lake, Minn.) had a great night leading the offense with 51 assists. Trost's night was also highlighted by surpassing Cassie Yates for No. 2 all-time.
Perrel would hit .308 with 22 kills and six errors, bouncing back after missing the last three matches due to injury. Perrel would complete a double-double on the night with 11 digs.
Kassi Green (R-Jr., OH, Anoka, Minn.) added 14 kills and hit .100,
Kali Erickson (Sr., OH, Fargo, N.D.) would add eight kills, while
Kaitlin Sikkink (R-Fr., MH, St. Charles, Minn.) was also potent on the attack with six kills and a .353 hitting percentage.
Trost's performance would guide the Golden Eagles to a .209 hitting percentage as they had 58 kills and 24 errors. Trost would average 12.8 assists per game.
Defensively,
Ali Schueler (R-Fr., Lib., Howards Grove, Wis.) led the defense with 20 digs. Trost would add 15, while Perrel had 11.
UMC was strong on the block on the night. Sikkink led the way with six block assists.
Kelci Green (R-Jr., MH, Anoka, Minn.) would add five block assists and one solo block, while
Kassi Green (R-Jr., OH, Anoka, Minn.) had four block assists and one solo block. The Golden Eagles would have 13 total blocks.
Upper Iowa looked to Chelsea Berry's 13 kills to lead the way. She would hit .344 for the match. Bethany Lovhaug added seven kills and hit .313, while Haley Poula added six kills.
At setter, Malissa LeCalire led the way with 24 assists, while Carlee Ketchum added 16. The Peacocks would hit .164 for the match with 47 kills and 23 attack errors.
Defensively, libero Ashley Larson had a big match for Upper Iowa with 28 digs. Kelsey Hinrichs added 10. On the block, the Peacocks looked to four block assists and two solo blocks from Bethany Lovhaug.
The Golden Eagles would lead 19-14 in the first set after a Perrel kill. Upper Iowa would take the final 11 points of the set, winning on a Perrel attack error to take it 25-19.
Minnesota Crookston would bounce back and take the second set 25-20 after a clutch kill from Perrel.
The Golden Eagles would race out to a 15-4 lead in set three led by three kills apiece from Perrel and
Kassi Green. Minnesota Crookston would be able to build upon their early dominance to win 25-15 on a Perrel kill.
UMC would get out to a 13-11 lead in the fourth set after an Erickson kill.
However, Upper Iowa would not go away as they knotted it up 13-13 on a Berry kill. UMC would take the lead again but the Peacocks would again match the score at 22-22 after a Lovhaug kill. The Golden Eagles would take the final three points of the frame and would take set and match point on a Perrel service ace.
The Golden Eagles will wrap up their home slate Sat., Nov. 5 at 4 p.m. against No. 6 Winona State University. UMC fell 3-0 to the Warriors earlier this season. Saturday will be Senior Day for UMC as they honor their three seniors, Trost, Erickson and
Casey Cashman (Sr., DS, Ashland, Wis.).
