In this week's "Get To Know Your Golden Eagles", we sat down with UMC men's basketball freshman Chase Johnson, a native of La Crosse, Wis. Johnson is one of five newcomers for the Golden Eagle men's basketball team. We talked to Chase about how he is adjusting to college basketball and what he enjoys to do off of the court.
What has been the biggest adjustment been for you so far?
"It has definitely been being away from my family. Seven hours away is kind of far, but I have started to get used to it."
How has it helped you having several other young players, including several from the state of Wisconsin, to help you out as you adjust to being away from your family?
"If I have a problem I go to talk to them. I know they are feeling the same thing that I am feeling. Both of the other Wisconsin freshmen like the Wisconsin Badgers, as well, so that is nice!"
Did you grow up a lifelong Wisconsin Badger fan?
"I love the Badgers. They are a great program, so it definitely helps having a few of the other guys who cheer for them."
Your Dad played college basketball at Evansville and went on to play some professional basketball. How did his experience help to push you to chase your dreams as you were growing up?
"He always instilled what he learned as a player and he has always taught me the game. I know that he is always there for me and he will push me no matter what."
What was it about the UMC men's basketball program that you really liked and helped lead to your deciding to come play basketball here?
"The coaching staff seemed like nice guys that are going to help to make me a better basketball player and person."
What has been the biggest adjustment for you on the court?
"It has to be the talent. In high school you are the best player on your team and now everyone is just as good as you. So you have to work harder than everyone else."
What do you see your role on the team as this year?
"It is pretty much the same as high school. I see myself as a rebounder and someone who can get offensive rebounds and make plays to help the team out."
How have some of the older guys helped you to make adjustments in your game?
"They just watch me and if I make mistake they will tell me and if I do something good they will tell me good job. They are just there no matter what. It is nice."
What are some things you enjoy to do when not playing basketball?
"I like to play video games like NBA 2K17 and Zombies. I also like to hang out with friends."
Do you have a lot of teammates that you play those video games with?
"Pretty much all of the guys play with me. It is a good thing that I am the best at those games."
Do you have a favorite musician?
"My favorite musician is probably Drake. I like all of his music."
Do you have a favorite NBA player and why?
"Lebron James. I have always been of his. I personally think he is the greatest player of all time and I just like the way he plays the game."
