Soccer Downed in Season Opener at Bemidji

Bemidji, Minn.- The Golden Eagle soccer team hit the road and opened up the 2015 UMC fall athletic season with a 2-1 loss at Bemidji State University, Thursday night. In the conference loss, the Golden Eagles were outshot 17-6 with a 9-2 margin in shots on goal.

BSU got on the board first as Miranda Famestad (So., Sioux Falls, S. Dak.) headed a ball past UMC keeper, Lexie Gauger (Jr., Green Bay, Wis./Criminal Justice) in the closing minutes of the first half. The Golden Eagles answered back with their first goal of the 2015 campaign, in the opening minute of the second half, as junior midfielder, Taylor Peterson (Bismarck, N. Dak./Business Management) headed home a corner kick by midfielder Delaney McIntyre (Sr., Flin Flon, Manitoba/Sport and Recreation Management).

The Beavers closed out the game's scoring in the 53rd minute when Sarah Stram (Jr., Elk Grove Village, Ill.) scored on a penalty kick that beat Gauger who made seven total saves in the night game. UMC had a great chance to tie the game in the closing minutes when junior defender Samantha Deutsch (Lakeville, Minn./Accounting and Finance) hit the cross bar on a 35 foot out shot that was the Golden Eagles final scoring chance.

"I thought we played well enough to get something out of this game," said head coach Joe Alianiello. "We have some things to clean up, but there were definite positives we can take from this game. I'm disappointed with the result, but happy with the competiveness that we showed."

The Golden Eagles (0-1) will now have a week to prepare for their home opener when they host Northwest Missouri State University on September 11th. Opening kick in the nonconference match is scheduled for noon at the UMC soccer field.
