Golden Eagles Shut Down No. 13 Minnesota State for 68 Minutes Until Late Goals Lead Mavericks Past UMC 2-0

CROOKSTON, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston soccer program made things interesting Sun., Sept. 27 on the pitch of the UMC Soccer Field against No. 13 Minnesota State University, Mankato. The Golden Eagles were able to shut down a potent Maverick offense for 68 minutes but two late goals would sink the Golden Eagles despite a tough performance against Minnesota State.

UMC falls to 2-5-1 (2-3-0 NSIC), while Minnesota State improves to 7-1-0 (5-0-0 NSIC) with Sunday's victory.
 
The Golden Eagles were the team with the most dangerous chances in the first half led by a Courtney Armborst (Sr., F, West St. Paul, Minn.) rocket in the 38th minute. UMC would quickly earn a penalty kick in the box in the 39th minute. Kallie Gau (Jr., MF, Monticello, Minn.) would take the penalty kick but Lauren Hoeppner would get the save as the game would stay locked at 0-0.
 
UMC would continue to hold strong early in the second half but Minnesota State would start testing the Golden Eagles as the second half went on. The Mavericks would have a flurry of shots in between the 56th and 58th minutes but would come up empty.
 
The Mavericks would have another opportunity in the 66th minute as Maddy Burandt had a shot on net but Lexie Gauger (Jr., GK, Green Bay, Wis.) would come away with the save.
 
Minnesota State would get on the board with a Kiana Nickel goal in the 69th minute after Korey Kronforst played the ball into the box.
 
After a foul for UMC in the 79th minute, Laura Schwickerath would convert the penalty kick to take the 2-0 advantage.
 
UMC was led on the day by Armborst, who had three shots and two shots on goal.
 
Nickel led Minnesota State with three shots on goal and four overall.
 
Lauren Hoeppner would get the win with three saves for Minnesota State. Gauger would play strong for Minnesota Crookston. She had eight saves and two goals against.
 
UMC will return to play as they take on Wayne State College (Neb.) Sat., Oct. 3 at 11 a.m. UMC will then battle Augustana College (S.D.) at 1 p.m. Oct. 4.
