CROOKSTON, Minn.- The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team fell 12-5 and 4-3 to Bemidji State University in a mid-week doubleheader Wed., April 8 at UMC baseball field. The Golden Eagles were led by strong pitching that allowed just four runs on seven hits in nine innings, but four runs in the second inning off
Trevor Buttermore (Jr., RHP, North St. Paul, Minn./Criminal Justice) would be enough for the Beaver win. In game two, Bemidji State would score nine runs in the first two innings to catapult them to a 12-5 win.
In game two, Buttermore would pitch well overall in his three innings, giving up just the one big inning. Buttermore would give up four earned runs on five hits. The Golden Eagle bullpen would be in prime shape Wednesday as three players had strong outings for Minnesota Crookston.
Jarad Nelson (Jr., RHP, Karlstad, Minn./Education) shut down BSU, pitching four innings of shutout baseball with just two hits given up.
Wyatt Huso (R-Fr., RHP, Eagan, Minn./Agricultural Systems Management) would continue his strong season out of the pen, going one inning and giving up no hits and no runs.
Alan Frank (Sr., LHP, St. Michael, Minn./Applied Studies) would also give UMC a chance to win with a shutout inning in the ninth.
BSU would start the scoring in the second when the Beavers got to Buttermore. Mason Bellew singled to left field to drive in Terry Hadden. Joey Hanowski would then come through with a clutch double to clear the bases and drive in Tyler Nelson, Jake Tuholsky and Bellew.
UMC would get one run back in the second as
Zach Frazier (R-Fr., C, Grand Rapids, Minn./Natural Resources) singled to drive in
Colton Haight (Jr., C/OF, Rogers, Minn./Sports and Rec Management).
The Golden Eagles would add two more in the fourth.
Patrick Higgins (So., OF, Eagan, Minn./Criminal Justice) doubled to elft field to drive in Haight.
Jesse Jennings (Sr., OF, Robbinsdale, Minn./Criminal Justice) then came through with a single to drive in
Kenny Perez (Jr., IF/DH, Orlando, Fla./Health Science).
Minnesota Crookston had the game-tying run in scoring position with two outs in the seventh as Jennings walked and
Ethan Mushitz (Fr., 2B/SS, East Grand Forks, Minn./Criminal Justice) walked in the inning. However, Drake Huggans would come through with a big strike out to keep UMC at bay.
Logan Riedel would get the BSU win after going six innings and allowing three earned runs on nine hits with four strikeouts.
Terry Hadden would pick up the save for the Beavers, going two innings and shutting down UMC.
The Golden Eagles were led on game two by Haight, who was 2-of-4 with two runs scored, and Perez, who was 2-of-4 with one run scored.
Richie Navratil (Sr., RHP, Blankso, Czech Republic/Management) would struggle in the game one start for the Golden Eagles. Navratil would give up 11 runs, nine of them earned, on 12 hits in 2.1 innings pitched.
The Golden Eagles would get strong bullpen pitching out of
Marcus Campbell (Jr., RHP, St. Croix Falls, Wis./Golf and Turf Management),
Riley Thompson (Fr., OF/RHP, Owatonna, Minn./Criminal Justice) and
Ryan Haggstrom (Jr., 1B/RHP, Apple Valley, Minn.). The three pitchers gave up just one earned run on four hits in 4.2 innings pitched.
BSU would score nine runs in the first innings led by a Hadden home run and a Dylan Webb two-run single.
The Golden Eagles would add two runs in the second. Jennings would single to drive in Perez.
Dalton Parks (Jr., OF, West Valley City, Utah/Sports and Rec Management) would come up with a triple to drive in
Jennings.
BSU would add two runs in the third.
The Golden Eagles would score two in the fifth as Haight and
Thomas Kinsella (Jr., IF, North Branch, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) scored on an error.
A Joey Hanowski single would drive in Riedel in the sixth to put the Beavers ahead 12-4.
The Golden Eagles added one in the seventh when Jennings singled to drive in pinch-runner TImothy Scott, Jr. (Jr., OF, Macon, Ga./Elementary Education).
UMC was led in game two by Jennings, who was 3-of-3 with two RBI's and one run scored, and Perez, who was 2-of-4 with one run scored.
The Golden Eagles will host Wayne State College in a weekend series Sat., April 11 and Sun., April 12 at UMC Baseball Field in Crookston, Minn.
