Frazier Bases-Clearing Triple Leads Golden Eagles to Split With Northern State 8-7, 5-8

ABERDEEN, S.D. – A Zach Frazier (R-Fr., C, Grand Rapids, Minn./Natural Resources) RBI triple in the seventh inning proved to drive in the game-winning runs as the University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team would hang on for an 8-7 win over Northern State University in game two. The Golden Eagles would fall 8-5 in game one, despite comeback attempts late against the Wolves.

The Golden Eagles improve to 12-36 (6-26) with Sunday's wins over Northern State. They are now just one win shy of tying the program's all-time conference wins record of seven set during the 2003 season. Northern State falls to 23-20 (16-14 NSIC) with the split.

Richie Navratil (Sr., RHP, Blansko, Czech Republic/Management) would get the ball in game two and would pitch well, giving up five runs, three of them earned, on eight hits as he helped to put the team in a position to win the game.

Northern State would control the game early as they would put two runs in the first as Tyler Gripentrog and Lucas Lorenz crossed the plate.

The Wolves would add one in the second as Eric O'Bryan doubled down the left field line to drive in Clayton Nutting to make it 3-0.

One more run would cross for Northern State in the fourth to give them the 4-0 lead, but UMC would come crawling back in the fifth. Ryan Haggstrom (Jr., 1B/RHP, Apple Valley, Minn./Accounting) swung the big bat as he doubled to drive in Ethan Mushitz (Fr., 2B/SS, East Grand Forks, Minn./Criminal Justice) and Dalton Parks (Jr., OF, West Valley City, Utah/Sports and Rec Management). A Colton Haight (Jr., C/OF, Rogers, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) single would drive in Patrick Higgins (So., OF, Eagan, Minn./Criminal Justice). Frazier would score on a wild pitch.

Tied 4-4, Frazier would score on a Higgins fielder's choice to put the Golden Eagles ahead 5-4.

Northern State would get the run back in the sixth as Jack Schmidt doubled to drive in Mark Abrahamson to knot the game at 5-5.

The seventh is where Frazier would come through in a big way with a bases-clearing triple to drive in Riley Thompson (Fr., OF, Owatonna, Minn./Criminal Justice), Thomas Kinsella (Jr., IF, North Branch, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) and Timothy Scott, Jr. (Jr., OF, Macon, Ga./Sports and Rec Management).

Northern State would make the comeback attempt with two runs in the seventh but UMC would hang on for the 8-7 win.

Cody Pamperin (So., RHP, Shakopee, Minn./Golf and Turf Management) would pick up the win, moving to 3-2, as he went one inning and gave up no runs on one hit. Luke Thoma (Jr., RHP, Little Falls, Minn./Natural Resources) came on and got his first save after shutting down the Wolves in two innings.

UMC was led by Frazier, who was 2-of-3 with three RBI's and two runs scored.

In game two, Alan Frank (Sr., LHP, St. Michael, Minn./Applied Studies) would get the start and struggle in three innings, giving up eight runs, five of them earned, on 10 hits. Pamperin came in and was effective, going three innings and shutting out Northern State on four hits.

UMC would start the game with a Kenny Perez (Jr., DH/IF, Orlando, Fla./Health Science) single to drive in Haggstrom and Mushitz and it would look promising.

However, Northern State would score six runs in the first inning to quickly take a 6-2 advantage.
The Wolves added two runs in the third to extend to an 8-2 lead.

In the fourth UMC would try to crawl back as Colt Trebesch (Jr., IF/RHP, Glencoe, Minn.) singled  and Kinsella would score on an error.

A Parks error would score Trebesch to cut the lead to 8-4. Higgins would score on a balk to end things 8-5.

The Golden Eagles will wrap up the season April 29 at home against Minot State University at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. The games will mark the final contests of the 2015 season as UMC tries to surpass their all-time conference wins mark.
