CROOKSTON, Minn.- The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball program picked up a split with the University of Mary Saturday afternoon at UMC Baseball Field. The Golden Eagles fell 9-2 in game one but bounced back with a dominant 18-3 win over the Marauders in game two led by 15 hits on the day and another strong performance on the mound from
Nolan Wahlberg (Jr., RHP, Blaine, Minn./Criminal Justice), who picked up his fifth win of the season for the Golden Eagles.
UMC's bats on the day were led by an impressive performance from catcher
Zach Frazier (R-Fr., C, Grand Rapids, Minn./Natural Resources), who went 5-for-6 with five runs batted in (RBI's) and two runs scored.
UMC moves to 11-31 (5-21 NSIC) with the split. The 11th win marks a program record for the Golden Eagles, surpassing their win total during the 2012 season. The Golden Eagles are now looking to match their best conference wins total in program history, needing just two to break the record last accomplished during the 2003 season when the team had seven conference victories. U-Mary falls to 5-33 (3-21 NSIC) on the season.
Game two was highlighted by an impressive hitting performance from the Golden Eagles who were able to get to the University of Mary pitching staff.
The Golden Eagles would start out the game with a ferocious pace scoring five runs in the opening frame. The scoring would start as
Dalton Parks (Jr., OF, West Valley City, Utah/Sports and Rec Management) scored on a passed wall.
Colton Haight (Jr., C/OF, Rogers, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) would then come through with an RBI single to drive in
Ryan Haggstrom (Jr., 1B/RHP, Apple Valley, Minn./Accounting). A
Jesse Jennings (Sr., OF, Robbinsdale, Minn./Criminal Justice) bunt single would get down and an error on the first baseman would allow Haight to score.
Thomas Kinsella (Jr., IF, North Branch, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) would then scored on a wild pitch and an RBI double from Frazier to drive in Jennings would cap off the scoring to make it 5-0.
U-Mary would get two runs in the second as Austin Ell doubled to left to drive in Cory Dixon. A.J. Schaefbauer would then single to left field to drive in Ell to cut the UMC advantage to 5-2.
However, UMC would not let off the gas a they would add five more in the second as Haight and Perez would score on an error by the short stop to lead the charge. Jennings, Haggstrom and
Ethan Mushitz (Fr., 2B/SS, East Grand Forks, Minn./Criminal Justice) would also scored for the Golden Eagles.
UMC wasn't finished yet though as they saved their biggest inning for the third, plating eight runs to take a 18-3 lead over the Marauders. UMC's inning started as Haight hit a two RBI single to drive in Haggstrom and Mushitz. Frazier would come through with a bases clearing triple to drive in Jennings, Kinsella and Haight.
Patrick Higgins (So., OF, Eagan, Minn./Criminal Justice) would follow suit, making in back to back triples to drive in Frazier.
U-Mary would add a run as Sean Hennen scored on an error in the fourth.
UMC senior Travis Madgzas (Sr., DH/OF, Duluth, Minn./Criminal Justice) would make a pinch-run appearance in the game, which was his first apperance of the season, after suffering an injury before the season. Magdzas was given a round of applause when coming into the game on Senior Day as he was honored along with Frank, Jennings and Navratil before game two for their accomplishments in the Maroon and Gold.
Wahlberg would throw a complete seven-inning game for the Golden Eagles, giving up three runs, two of them earned, on seven hits with six strikeouts to move to 5-3 on the season. Wahlberg's performance came a day after picking up the save in UMC's game two win over U-Mary.
U-Mary would use seven pitchers in the game, but the loss would go to Travis Holte, who gave up nine runs, just one of them earned, on six hits.
UMC was led in game two by Haight, who was 2-of-3 with four RBI's and three runs scored. Perez would go 2-of-4 with two runs scored. Frazier went 2-of-3 for the game with four RBI's and one run scored, while Mushitz was 3-of-4 with two runs scored.
The Golden Eagles would hold their own early on in game one of the day.
Alan Frank (Sr., LHP, St. Michael, Minn./Applied Studies) would get the start and go five innings giving up five runs, two of them earned, on seven hits.
Richie Navratil (Sr., RHP, Blankso, Czech Republic/Management) would come on in relief and go two innings, giving up four runs, two of them earned, on four hits.
U-Mary would start the game one scoring in the third when Hennen singled to drive in Drew Feuerbach and McKeon Meyhoff. Dixon then reached on a Mushitz error, allowing Hennen to score.
The Golden Eagles would strike back in the third. Frazier would score as U-Mary would try to pick off Haggstrom at first base. The first baseman would run down Haggstrom, who would make it to second, but they would tag out Higgins. However, Frazier had already crossed the plate as UMC got a run.
In the fourth, Frazier would come through with a big single to drive in Haight to cut the lead to 3-2.
U-Mary would add two runs in the sixth. Dixon would double to left to drive in Tom Imholte. Ell would then hit a double to drive Dixon in.
The Marauders added four security runs in the seventh. Dixon would double to clear the bases and drive in Imholte, Feuerbach and Meyhoff. Mason Schiff would then reach on a Mushitz error as Dixon scored to make it 9-2.
UMC was led in game one by Frazier, who was 3-of-3 with one RBI and one run scored.
Kenny Perez (Jr., DH/IF, Orlando, Fla./Health Science) would go 2-of-4 on the day.
The win for U-Mary in game one would go to Nicholas Stobbe, who went 4.2 innings and gave up two earned runs on seven hits.
The Golden Eagles will head to Augustana College (S.D.) Wed., April 22 for games at 1 and 3 p.m. in Sioux Falls, S.D.
