CROOKSTON, Minn.- The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team fell 6-0 and 10-2 to University of Minnesota Duluth Wednesday on a windy day in Crookston, Minn., as winds gusted up to near 40 miles per hour durin the doubleheader. The Golden Eagles got strong starting pitching from
Richie Navratil (Sr., RHP, Blansko, Czech Republic/Management) and
Trevor Buttermore (Jr., RHP, North St. Paul, Minn./Criminal Justice). UMC was unable to get the bats going as we were held to just seven hits in the two games as they struggled against UMD starters Spencer Diedrich and Marcus Frederickson.
Minnesota Crookston falls to 9-29 (3-19 NSIC) with the doubleheader sweep. Minnesota Duluth improves to 19-11 (13-7 NSIC).
Navratil would put together one of his best starts on the season. The UMC starter would retire the first 10 batters he faced before getting into a bit of trouble in the fourth. However, Navratil would be able to get out of the inning with just two runs on five hits. Navratil would go five innings and give up three earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.
In the fourth, UMD would get the two runs as Alex Wojciechowski doubled to drive in Bo Hellquist and Kyle Comer singled to bring home Wojciechowski.
UMD would add four runs in the sixth. Josh Denisen would single to drive in Jimmy Heck and Grant Farley scored on a wild pitch. Marco Lucarelli would come home on a sacrifice fly from Bo Hellquist. Wojciechowski would come through again in the sixth with a single to drive in Brian Pierce.
Frederickson would be the story for the Bulldogs, pitching a two-hit shutout in five innings. Matt Mattiacci and Jonny Houston came out of the bullpen to aid in the shutout.
For UMC,
Colt Trebesch (Jr., RHP/IF, Glencoe, Minn./Elementary Education) put together a strong relief outing with no runs on no hits in 1.1 innings pitched.
In game two, Buttermore would go 6.2 innings, giving up six runs, four of them earned, on five hits with seven strikeouts.
UMC's bullpen would struggle as
Marcus Campbell (Jr., RHP, St. Croix Falls, Wis./Golf and Turf Management) gave up a run, and
Wyatt Huso (R-Fr., RHP, Eagan, Minn./Agricultural Systems Management) gave up four runs on three hits in 0.2 innings.
Cayden Barta (So., RHP, Fargo, N.D./Criminal Justice) would be the exception, pitching 1.1 shutout innings for UMC.
Minnesota Duluth got going in the second when Matt Vogt doubled to drive in Kyle Comer.
In the third, Wojciechowski would hit a two-run home run to drive in himself and John Meyer.
UMD would add a run in the fifth as Hellquist doubled to drive in Meyer.
The Golden Eagles would cut the lead down to 4-1 as
Jesse Jennings (Sr., OF, Robbinsdale, Minn./Criminal Justice) doubled to drive in
Thomas Kinsella (Jr., IF, North Branch, Minn./Sports and Rec Management).
UMC would add two in the seventh, however would really break things open in the eighth as Meyer hit a grand slam to put the Bulldogs up 10-1.
The Golden Eagles would get one back in the ninth when
Colton Haight (Jr., C/OF, Rogers, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) walked to drive in
David Anaya (So., 2B/SS, Tucson, Ariz./Health Science).
Spencer Diedrich would get the win for UMD, going six innings and giving up no earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts.
Haight, Kinsella, Jennings,
Patrick Higgins (So., OF, Eagan, Minn./Criminal Justice) and
Riley Thompson (Fr., OF/RHP, Owatonna, Minn./Criminal Justice) scattered hits in game two.
The Golden Eagles will host University of Mary on the weekend. The series is scheduled for Sat., April 18 and Sun., April 19, but with rain forecasted for Sunday, the games may be moved to Friday at Jim Karn Field in Crookston, Minn.
