CROOKSTON, Minn.- The University of Minnesota Crookston softball team fell 10-3 and 9-4 to University of Minnesota Duluth Tuesday in a mid-week doubleheader at UMC Softball Field. The Golden Eagles competed early in both games but big innings for the Bulldogs would do in the Golden Eagles.
Minnesota Crookston falls to 4-34 (0-20 NSIC) with Tuesday's losses to the Bulldogs. Minnesota Duluth improves to 26-17 (10-10 NSIC) with the victories.
Jordyn Derflinger (Jr., RHP, Henderson, Nev./Elementary Education) would get the game one start. Derflinger would pitch well through the first four innings, giving up just three runs on five hits. However, the Bulldos would get three runs on four hits in the fifth to chase Derflinger. The junior would give up six earned runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings.
Bailey Braatz (So., RHP, Buffalo, Minn./Health Science) would come on in relief and give up four earned runs on six hits.
UMD got the scoring started as Natalie Wright was walked with the bases loaded to allow Sami Schnyder to score to put the Bulldogs up 1-0.
The Golden Eagles would answer as
Alexis Khoshaba (Jr., OF, Richmond, British Columbia/Sports and Rec Management) hit her fifth home run of the season to drive in
Allison Foley (Jr., SS, Lockport, Ill./Accounting) to make it 2-1.
The Bulldogs would add a run in the second when Becky Smith doubled to drive in Ashley Schilling.
Tied 2-2, UMD would come up with a big inning in the fifth. Schilling would single to drive in Alexia Klaas. Schnyder would then hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Ashley Lewis. Hannah Schmoll then singled to drive in Heather Woyak.
UMD added two more runs in the sixth off Braatz as Jordan Rice belted a home run and Schilling singled to drive in Klaas.
Rice would hit her second home run of the game in the seventh to make it 10-2.
The Golden Eales added a run in the seventh as
Brooke Timmins (Jr., C, Magnolia, Texas/Sports and Rec Management) scored on a fielder's choice to cut the deficit to 10-3.
Cayli Sadler would get the win for UMD, going seven innings and giving up three runs on seven hits.
The Golden Eagles were led by Hollinger, who was 2-of-4 with one RBI, and Khoshaba, who was 2-of-3 with two RBI's and one run scored.
In game two,
Sammy Knudson (So., Fergus Falls, Minn./Health Science) got the start in game two and went 3.1 innings and gave up six runs, three of them earned, on nine hits. Knudson had the opportunity to play against her twin sister's team. Her sister, Sadie Knudson, is a freshman for the Bulldogs. She warmed up in the bullpen but did not make an appearance Wednesday.
Brooke Vatthauer (Sr., LHP, Crookston, Minn./Health Science) came on relief and pitched 2.2 innings, giving up three earned runs on five hits.
Victoria Bayliss (Fr., OF/RHP, West Bloomfield, Mich./Elementary Education) made her second appearance of the year in the circle and pitched a shutout inning.
UMC scored first in game two as Foley and
Shelby Hollinger (Sr., 2B, Neudorf, Saskatchewan/Health Science) scored on an error.
The Bulldogs added a run as Rice and Schmoll scored on an error in the third.
UMD would have a big fourth inning. Schnyder would single to drive in pinch-runner Laura Nadeu. Smith then singled to drive in Schnyder and Woyak. Schmoll would then score on an error as the Bulldogs would lead 6-3.
UMD added two runs in the fifth led by RBI singles from Schmoll and Smith. A Schilling single in the sixth would drive in Lewis to make it 9-3.
The Golden Eagles would add a run in the sixth when
Josee Plante (Sr., 3B, Manitou, Manitoba/Heaklth Science) singled to drive in Khoshaba.
Sam Hartmann got the win for UMD. She would pitch seven innings and give up four runs, one of them earned, on four hits.
The Golden Eagles will return to action as they hit the road this weekend. UMC will face Southwest Minnesota State University April 18 at 1 and 3 p.m. in Marshall, Minn. The Golden Eagles will then head to University of Sioux Falls Sun., April 19 for games at 12 and 2 p.m.
