The Golden Eagles Fall 9-5 and 8-6 to Upper Iowa

FAYETTE, Iowa - The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team fell 9-5 and 8-6 to Upper Iowa University Sun., March 29 at Robertson Woods Field in Fayette, Iowa. The Golden Eagles went 1-3 in the series against the Peacocks. UMC now sits at 7-16 (1-7 NSIC). Upper Iowa improved to 10-10 (3-5 NSIC) with the pair of wins.

The Golden Eagles would look to Trevor Buttermore (Jr., RHP, North St. Paul, Minn./Criminal Justice) in the game on start. Buttermore would suffer the loss after going 2.2 innings and giving up nine runs, four of them earned, on four hits.

UMC would open the first with a run as Ryan Haggstrom (Jr., 1B/P, Apple Valley, Minn./Accounting) hit a sacrifice fly to score Dalton Parks (Jr., OF, West Valley City, Utah/Sports and Rec Management).

Upper Iowa would tie up the game 1-1 when Luis Ravelo scored on an error.

The Golden Eagles would get the lead back 2-1 when David Anaya (So., 2B/SS, Tucson, Ariz./Health Science) doubled to drive in Thomas Kinsella (Jr., IF, North Branch, Minn./Sports and Rec Management).

The Peacocks would come through in the second and third innings scoring eight runs to take the 9-2 lead over the Golden Eagles. Upper Iowa was led by a Jacob Greco double to drive in Ravelo and Callahan Seehase. In the third, Ravelo hit a three-run home run to drive in Colton Jannsen and Adam Budron.

The Golden Eagles would cut the lead to 9-3 as Kinsella singled to drive in Kenny Perez (Jr., DH/1B, Orlando, Fla./Health Science). UMC would be able to cut the lead to 9-5 in the sixth when Patrick Higgins (So., OF, Eagan, Minn./Criminal Justice) singled to drive in Perez. Parks singled to drive home Colton Haight (Jr., C/OF, Buffalo, Minn./Sports and Rec Management).

The win in game one for Upper Iowa went to Charley Cunningham, who pitched 5.2 innings and gave up five runs, four of them earned, on nine hits.

The Golden Eagles were led in game one by Perez, who was 3-of-4 with two runs. Parks was 2-of-4 with one run scored and one RBI.

In game two, Nolan Wahlberg (Jr., RHP, Blaine, Minn./Criminal Justice) would get the start. Wahlberg went seven innings and would give up seven runs, five of them earned, on 12 hits.

The Peacocks would start the scoring in the first, getting Upper Iowa out to a 2-0 lead. Eric Cottrell hit a two-run double to drive in Greco and Alex George.

The Golden Eagles would come through in the second. Haight would score on a throwing error and Anaya and Riley Thompson (Fr., OF, Owatonna, Minn./Criminal Justice) would score on a Parks single.

Upper Iowa would add a run on an error in the second to make it 3-3.

The Peacocks would take a 4-3 lead in the fourth when Jannsen scored on another error.

UMC would score two in the fifth to take the 5-4 lead as Parks scored on a throw down to second on a stolen base. Haight would then single to drive in Haggstrom.

Upper Iowa would add a run of their own in the fifth on a Budron single to drive in Cottrell to make it 5-5.

The Peacocks would take the lead 7-5 on a Greco two-run home run to drive in Cody Booker.

UMC would add a run in the eighth as Haight scored on a throwing error by the pitcher.

Upper Iowa would add one more run in the eight when Mitch Moser scored on an error by the Golden Eagles. The Peacocks would hang on for 8-6 win.

The win for the Peacocks would go to Mason Buster, who went 3.2 innings and gave up one run, none of them earned, on no hits. Ross Kulick would pick up the save for Upper Iowa.

The Golden Eagles were led in game two by Haggstrom, who was 2-of-4 with one run scored.

Minnesota Crookston will return to action Tues., March 31 as they face University of Sioux Falls at 1 and 3 p.m.
