Golden Eagles fall 12-9 and 4-3 to End Five-Game Series Against Blue Hawks

MILES CITY, Mont. – The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team fell in a pair of hard-fought games Sunday at Tedesco Field in Miles City, Mont. The Golden Eagles fell 12-9 to Dickinson State University despite a 3-for-4 performance from Jesse Jennings (Sr., OF, Robbinsdale, Minn./Criminal Justice) in game one. Jennings had five RBI's and two runs scored with a single, double and triple.

In game two, UMC fell 4-3 despite a strong performance on the mound from Nolan Wahlberg (Jr., RHP, Baline, Minn./Criminal Justice), who went seven innings, allowing just three earned runs on eight hits. 
In the first game Sunday, Luke Thoma (Jr., RHP, Little Falls, Minn./Natural Resources) got the ball. Thoma would go 3.1 innings and give up five earned runs on six hits on the game. Colt Trebesch (Jr., P/IF, Glencoe, Minn./Elementary Education) would come on in relief and go innings, giving up five earned runs on five hits. Wyatt Huso (R-Fr., RHP, Eagan, Minn./Agricultural Systems Management) would see his first action as a Golden Eagle and give up one earned run and no hits in 0.2 innings pitched.

The Blue Hawks would get the scoring started in the bottom of the first as Dylan Scabo scored on an Eric Seiler single to make it 1-0.

The Golden Eagles would knot it up as Thomas Kinsella (Jr., IF, North Branch, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) crossed on a Patrick Amerson (So., 2B/SS, Eloy, Ariz./Management) single. Jennings would follow up the single with a clutch triple to drive in Amerson and Patrick Higgins (So., OF, Eagan, Minn./Criminal Justice) to give UMC a 3-1 advantage. A Ethan Mushitz (Fr., IF, East Grand Forks, Minn./Criminal Justice) single would bring Jennings home to extend the UMC advantage to 4-1. Ryan Haggstrom (Jr., 1B/P, Apple Valley, Minn./Accounting) would come through with a clutch hit, with a double to right center to bring home Dalton Parks (Jr., OF, West Valley City, Utah/Sports and Rec Management) to extend the Golden Eagle advantage to 5-1.

After a quiet second inning, Jordan Tescher would hit a two-run home run to drive home Jacob Hignite to cut the Golden Eagle lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the third.

The Blue Hawks would chase Thoma from the game in the bottom of the fourth. Landon Briscoe would double down the right field line to drive home Evan Loranger to cut the lead to 5-4.

With Trebesch now on the mound, Skabo would double to plate Briscoe and Caleb Burgard. Hignite would continue the inning with a two-run home run to score Skabo as Dickinson State had a 8-4 lead to end the half-inning.

The Golden Eagles would be able to cut the lead to 8-6 as Jennings scored on a Haggstrom single. Jennings would reach on a double this time.

Dickinson State would add four runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 12-6.

The Golden Eagles would add three runs in the bottom of the seventh but would fall short 12-9 after a big rally.

Minnesota Crookston was led by Jennings' performance in game one. Haggstrom was 2-of-5 with two RBI's, while Kinsella was 2-of-4 with two runs scored, as was Higgins.

Dickinson State looked to Hignite in game one, who was 2-of-3 with three runs scored and three RBI's, while Tescher was 2-of-3 with two runs scored and three RBI's.
Joey Buchanan got the win for UMC after going five innings and giving up five earned runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts.

In game two, Wahlberg would get the start for UMC and give up just three earned runs on eight hits with six strikeouts. The Blue Hawks were led by Chas Allen, who went six innings and gave up no earned runs on seven hits.

Dickinson State would score the first run of the game in the top of the third as Skabo singled to score Ryan Mitchell. The Blue hawks would extend their lead in the top of the fourth as Seiler scored on a John Hollingsworth ground out. Tescher would score on a Mitchell single later in the inning to make it 3-0 Blue Hawks.

The Golden Eagles would come through in the bottom of the fourth as Kinsella doubled to shallow left to score Mushitz. An error would allow Colton Haight (Jr., C, Buffalo, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) to score to cut the lead to 3-2.

UMC would knot the game at 3-3 as they executed a double steal with Parks and Mushitz, plating Parks.

Dickinson State would get what would prove to be the game-winning run as Mitchell reached on a Kinsella error to allow Seiler to score to make it 4-3.

The Golden Eagles were led in game two of the day by Mushitz, who was 2-of-3 with one run scored, and Kinsella, who was 2-of-3 with one RBI. Dickinson State looked to Tescher, who was 3-of-4 with one run scored.

UMC went 2-3 in the series against Dickinson State and moves to 3-6 overall as they head to Clearwater, Fla., beginning with games March 13 against Kentucky Wesleyan College and Ohio Wesleyan University.
