Lubke's Basket with 13 Seconds Left in Overtime Lifts Golden Eagles in Crazy Finish Against Sioux Falls 73-70

CROOKSTON, Minn. - Derrick Redd, Jr. (Jr., G, Menifee, Calif./Sports and Rec Management) found fifth-year senior Tim Lubke (G, St. Paul, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) with 13 seconds remaining in overtime as the University of Minnesota Crookston won a wild one at Lysaker Gymnasium 73-70 over University of Sioux Falls. Lubke would sink the contested lay-up and make both free throws as the Golden Eagles snapped a nine-game losing streak to move to 7-14 (5-12 NSIC), as Sioux Falls fell to 7-16 (4-13 NSIC).

The overtime win came on the heels of a highly eventful end to regulation for the Golden Eagles and Cougars. Up 60-57 with 1:43 left, Sioux Falls would cut the lead to 60-59 with a lay-up by Charles Ward with 36 seconds remaining. UMC would miss both free throws, giving the ball back to the Cougars, where they would send Zach Wessels to the charity stripe. Wessels would hit 1-of-2 to tie up the game 60-60.

After a missed jumper by Redd with six seconds remaining, Tyler West, Jr. (Sr., G/F, Portland, Ore./Communications) would accidentally foul Ward with three seconds left, sending him to the charity stripe. Sioux Falls' leading scorer would sink both free throws, giving USF a 62-60 advantage.

UMC would pass the ball across to half court to John Hughes (Jr., F, San Diego, Calif./Management), where they would call timeout. After another timeout. Kevin Larson (Sr., G, New Ulm, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) would inbound the ball. Larson's pass would nearly go through the rim but would ricochet off of the rim where Redd found the ball from quite a ways out and tipped the ball in. The play was reviewed several times, as the game clock had originally expired but official's deemed that nobody had touched the ball so the shot clock shouldn't have gone off and Redd's made basket was legal.

In overtime, UMC would take the 69-68 after a Redd free throw but Sioux Falls would take the lead back 70-69 with 25 seconds left as Jordan Stotts made the bucket, giving UMC one last chance, where Lubke would take advantage and make the shot off the assist from Redd and make both free throws after being fouled by Mack Johnson at the end of the game.

Minnesota Crookston would play without three starters in overtime who had fouled out, but would out-score Sioux Falls 11-8.

The Golden Eagles were led on the game by Redd, who played one of his best games of his career with 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field, 2-of-3 from beyond the arc and 6-of-9 from the free-throw line. Redd added five rebounds and four assists.

Kevin Larson (Sr., G, New Ulm, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) also played of the strongest games of his career, despite foul trouble. Larson had 19 points, five rebounds and three assists. Larson was 4-of-5 from beyond the arc.

Lubke came off the bench for 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field and 2-of-5 from beyond the arc.

The Golden Eagles were 24-of-47 for 51.1 percent from the field and 11-of-22 for 50 percent from beyond the arc. They struggled from the charity stripe, shooting just 14-of-23 for 60.9 percent.

Sioux Falls was led by 24 points and nine rebounds from Ward, while Mack Johnson added 19 points for the Cougars. USF was 25-of-56 for 44.6 percent from the field and just 2-of-14 for 14.3 percent from beyond the arc. They also struggled from the charity stripe, hitting 18-of-26 for 69.2 percent.

The Golden Eagles will look to follow up their thrilling victory as they host Southwest Minnesota State University Sat., Feb. 7 at 6 p.m.
