Perez Hits Two Home Runs to Catapult UMC to Split Against Dickinson State


MILES CITY, Mont.- The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team picked up a split Friday with Dickinson State University, winning game one 14-9 powered by a great performance from their bats led by a Kenny Perez (Jr., DH/1B, Orlando, Fla./Health Science) grand slam. In game two, the Golden Eagles got a strong performance from Trevor Buttermore (Jr., RHP, North St. Paul, Minn./Criminal Justice) after he gave up just three runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings pitched but Eric Seiler would throw a one-hitter for the Blue Hawks to lead them to a 3-2 win.

The Golden Eagles moved to 2-4 with the split, matching their win total over the last two seasons, as UMC begins a new era with Steve Gust at the helm. Friday was Dickinson State's first games as they moved to 1-1. The games were played at Tedesco Field in Miles City, Mont.

UMC started out the scoring as Ethan Mushitz (Fr., IF, East Grand Forks, Minn./Criminal Justice) stole home on a double steal to put the Golden Eagles ahead 1-0 in the top of the first.

Dickinson State added two runs in the bottom of the first when Jacob Hignite, who reached on a double, scored on a stolen base to make it 1-1 and Preston Tescher scored on a Tyler Czech single.
The Blue Hawks would take the lead in the bottom of the second when Ryan Risse scored on an error to make it 2-1. Skabo would score later in the inning as Tescher singled to third. Three more runs would cross on an error off a Seiler hit to drive in Tescher and Hignite to make it 6-1.

Dickinson State would extend their lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the third when Hollingsworth would score on a Burgard single.

The Golden Eagles would cut the deficit to 7-3 in the top of the fourth.Mushitz would score on a sacrifice fly from Perez. Ryan Haggstrom (Jr., 1B/P, Apple Valley, Minn./Accounting) would score, as well, on a sacrifice fly from Thomas Kinsella (Jr., IF, North Branch, Minn./Sports and Rec Management).

Dickinson State would take the 9-3 advantage in the bottom of the fourth as Tescher hit a solo home run to lead off the inning.

Minnesota Crookston would come away with a huge inning in the top of the fifth. David Anaya (So., IF, Tucson, Ariz./Health Science) would score on a Mushitz double to deep left center. The Golden Eagles would then load the bases, where Perez would come through in the clutch with a grand slam to drive in Mushitz, Haggstrom and Dalton Parks (Jr., OF, West Valley City, Utah/Sports and Rec Management). A Colton Haight (Jr., C, Buffalo, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) single would then drive in Kinsella, who had doubled.

Anaya would then come through with a clutch double to score Haight and Patrick Higgins (Jr., OF, Eagan, Minn./Criminal Justice). Haight would cross the plate on a double steal to make it 12-9 after UMC batted 14 in the inning.

The Golden Eagles would add two runs in the top of the seventh. Anaya would drive in Haight and Higgins with a double to make it 14-9.

Colt Trebesch (Jr., IF/RHP, Glencoe, Minn./Elementary Education) would get the win in relief for UMC after going three innings of relief and pitching lights out for the Golden Eagles, giving up just two hits and no runs. Richie Navratil (Sr., RHP, Blansko, Czech Republic/Management) got the start and went four innings, giving up four earned runs, nine runs total, on 11 hits.

The Golden Eagles were led at the plate by Perez, who was 1-of-4 with one run scored and five RBI's. Mushitz was 2-for-2 with one RBI, three runs scored and three walks, as he reached base during every at bat. Haight was 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored and Anaya was 2-of-4 with two runs scored and four RBI's.

The loss went to Dickinson State's Josh Schuller, who went 4.2 innings and gave up six earned runs on two hits. Tescher would lead the Blue Hawks going 2-for-4 with two RBI's and three runs scored. Seiler was 2-for-3 with two RBI's and one run scored.

In game two, Buttermore would lead the Golden Eagles, going 5.1 innings and giving up just three earned runs on seven hits. The Golden Eagles lone runs would come as Perez hit his second home run of the game to drive in Mushitz. His home run would be the lone hit of the game.

Seiler would go a complete game and give up two runs with one hit and three strikeouts. The Dickinson State bats in game two were led by Landon Briscoe, who was 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Hignite was 1-for-4 with two RBI's and one run scored.

Cody Pamperin (So., RHP, Shakopee, Minn./Golf and Turf Management) came on in relief and went 1.2 innings of shutout ball, giving up no runs and no hits.

The schedule has changed for tommorow. The Golden Eagles will play one nine inning game against Dickinson State at 2 p.m. C.T. in Miles City, Mont. Sunday, UMC and Dickinson State will play two more seven inning games at 12 and 2 p.m. C.T.
