The Scoop The University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team will host Concordia University-St. Paul in the first round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Women's Basketball Tournament Wed., Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. The Golden Eagles are
hosting their first-ever NSIC tournament game at Lysaker Gymnasium. The winner of Wednesday's game will advance to play the winner of Minnesota State University, Mankato and Minot State University Sat., Feb. 28 at 2:30 p.m. at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Previewing the Golden Eagles The UMC women's basketball team has had a breakthrough season during the 2014-15 campaign. UMC has tied their previous high win total in the
Mike Roysland era matching the 13 wins the team achieved during the 2010-11 season. In addition, the Golden Eagles have had four players earn weekly honors from the conference office, also a program-best.
Minnesota Crookston has been led on the season by
Alexa Thielman (Jr., G, Buffalo, Minn.), who comes in averaging 16.0 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. In addition, Thielman is shooting 34.1 percent from beyond the arc and 87.1 percent from the free-throw line. Thielman is just seven points from becoming the 10th player in program history to tally 1,000 points in a career. She would join teammate
Katrina Moenkedick (Jr., F, Perham, Minn.), who surpassed 1,000 points earlier this season and now has 1,050 points in her career, ranking eighth all-time. Moenkedick is averaging 14.5 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.
In addition to Thielman and Moenkedick, UMC has also had senior
Ebony Livingston (G/F, Minneapolis, Minn.) emerge during this season. Livingston has been the "glue" girl for the Golden Eagles, doing the little things for the team all year long. Livingston is averaging 9.2 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. In addition, Livingston is ranked in the top 10 nationally for free-throw percentage, hitting 92.0 percent from the line.
Previewing the Golden Bears The Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team has posted a 15-13 (11-11 NSIC) mark during the 2014-15 season. The Golden Bears are one-year removed from advancing to the elite eight of the NCAA Division II women's basketball tournament. Paul Fessler's squad is led by 6-2 forward Anika Whiting, who is averaging 17.3 points and 7.4 rebounds on the season. In addition to Whiting, Ameshia Kearney comes in averaging 13.5 points and 3.9 assists per game for the Golden Bears, while Mishayla Jones is averaging 10.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. UMC defeated Concordia-St. Paul 59-58 Feb. 14.
