First Half Run Guides Marauders Past Golden Eagles 59-50

BISMARCK, N.D.– The University of Minnesota Crookston's first half struggles would set them back in a 59-50 loss to University of Mary Saturday at the McDowell Activity Center in Bismarck, N.D. The Golden Eagles rebounded with a strong second half, out-scoring U-Mary 32-29 and shooting 46.2 percent from the field, but it would be too little as the Marauders hung on for the win. UMC falls to 7-17 (5-15 NSIC) with the loss, while U-Mary improves to 8-16 (6-14 NSIC) with the victory.

The Golden Eagles looked to 12 points and eight boards from Kevin Larson (Sr., G, New Ulm, Minn./Sports and Rec Management). Tyler West, Jr. (Sr., G/F, Portland, Ore./Communications) added 10 points and four boards, while Derrick Redd, Jr. (Jr., G, Menifee, Calif./Sports and Rec Management) and Tim Lubke (Sr., G, St. Paul, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) each had seven points.

Minnesota Crookston was 19-of-51 for 37.3 percent from the field on the game and 5-of-21 for 23.8 percent from beyond the arc for the game.

U-Mary looked to 14 points from Germain Decoste, while Chris Mason added 10 points and Jaycob Velasco came off the bench for 12 points. The Marauders were 25-of-53 for 47.2 percent from the field and 5-of-14 for 35.7 percent from beyond the arc.

The Golden Eagles would come out of the gate strong, getting out to a six-point lead on a Redd lay-in 16:46 left in the half. However, the Marauders would go on an 11-2 run to take the lead 13-10 with 8:30 left in the first half.

U-Mary would continue to build their lead from there, taking the 23-11 advantage on an Alex Anderson jumper with 5:28 left in the half. The Marauders would go into the half with a 30-18 lead. UMC would shoot just 7-of-25 from the field for 28.0 percent and 1-of-11 from beyond the arc for 9.1 percent.

The Marauders would control the second half, much like the first, in the early-going as they extended their lead to 19 (57-38) with 5:18 left in the game.

However the Golden Eagles would make a charge, out-scoring the Marauders 12-2 down the stretch, led by threes from Larson and Lucas Reller (Sr., G, Lead, S.D./Management), but it would be too little, too late.

Minnesota Crookston will wrap up regular-season action next weekend against Northern State University and Minnesota State University Moorhead. The Golden Eagles are currently in seventh place in the NSIC North standings.
