Golden Eagles Fall 72-65 to Bemidji State to End 2015

Box Score BEMIDJI, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston men's basketball team fell 72-65 to Bemidji State University Fri., Dec. 18 at BSU Gymnasium in Bemidji, Minn. The Golden Eagles tied up the game mid-way through the second half, but Bemidji State would end the game on a 26-19 run as they would come away with the win led by a double-double of 28 points and 13 boards from William Harvey. The Golden Eagles were led by 22 points from C.J. Polk (So., G, Milwaukee, Wis./Business Management).

The Golden Eagles fall to 3-7 (1-5 NSIC), while Bemidji State improved to 6-4 (3-3 NSIC). The Beavers picked up the sweep of UMC on the season.

In addition to Polk, Derrick Redd, Jr. (Sr., G, Menifee, Calif./Sports and Rec Management) added 12 points on 4-of-9 from the field, while Kobe Critchley (Fr., G, Roseville, Minn./Health Science) added 10 points and six assists.

Polk has had a strong last three games for the Golden Eagles, averaging 19.3 points per game.

The Golden Eagles were 28-of-66 from the field for 42.4 percent and 7-of-19 for 36.8 percent from beyond the arc.

Bemidji State was led by Harvey's 28 points and 13 boards on 11-of-13 from the field and 3-of-3 from beyond the arc. Irvin Womack added 13 points on 5-of-10 from the field, while Elijah Valdez added 10 points.
The Beavers were 26-of-52 for 50 percent from the field and 6-of-19 for 31.6 percent from beyond the arc and 14-of-22 for 63.6 percent from the charity stripe.

The Bemidji State Beavers went into the break with a 32-25 lead over the Golden Eagles. BSU would race out to a 14-6 mark as Irvin Womack made a lay-up with 15:15 remaining. The Golden Eagles would get it down to four points (14-10) as Redd hit a lay-up with 12:15 remaining. However BSU would make another charge as they went on a 12-5 run to go up 26-15 following another Womack lay-up with 7:22 left on the clock.

UMC would be able to chip away at the lead. A Lorenz jumper and a Redd free throw would cut the lead down to four points (29-25) with 1:07 left in the first half.

A Harvey three would give BSU a 32-25 lead going into the break.

UMC was led by Polk in the first half with 10 points on 5-of-11 from the field. Gable Smith (R-Fr., F, Lodi, Wis./Business Management) added five points. The Golden Eagles were 11-of-31 from the field for 35.5 percent and 2-of-8 for 25 percent from beyond the arc.

Bemidji State was led by 13 points and eight boards from Harvey in the first half. Womack added seven points for the Beavers. Bemidji State was 12-of-26 for 46.2 percent, while they were 3-of-9 for 33.3 percent from beyond the arc.

BSU started the second half on an 8-0 run to go up 40-25 on the Golden Eagles led by four points from Harvey. UMC would finally get on the scoreboard on a Polk three with 17:01 left in the game to cut the Beaver lead to 40-28.

The Golden Eagles would be able to get the lead down to seven (41-34) as Polk and Jim Warmack (So., F/C, East Grand Forks, Minn./Business Management) got back-to-back buckets for UMC. Harvey then struck, continuing his strong game with a three-pointer to put BSU up 44-34 with 14:38 remaining. Warmack responded with another bucket to cut UMC's deficit to 44-36 with 14:26 left. After two misses from Warmack on the offensive end, Harvey would convert the lay-up to put the Beavers up 46-38 with 13:26 left in the game.

The Golden Eagles would be able to cut the lead to 46-41 as Redd converted the old-fashioned three-point play with 12 minutes left in the game. The senior would follow it up with a clutch three-pointer from the win with 10:45 left. The Golden Eagles would tie it up as Gable Smith used his length to get the steal and drove the floor to get the bucket to knot it up 46-46 with 10:30 left in the game, completing a 10-0 run for UMC.

The Beavers would stop the run as Womack made the lay-up with 9:35 left in the game. Bemidji State would then build on that with an 8-2 run to push the lead out to 54-46 on a Ben Best jumper. The Golden Eagles would however still stay in the game as Redd hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to 57-51 with 6:45 left in the game. BSU would push the lead back out to 10 on a Valdez lay-up with 2:42 left in the contest.

UMC would stick around, cutting the lead to 65-58 on a Polk lay-in, but the BSU would be able to hold the Golden Eagles at that as they continued to hit crucial free throws to come out with a 72-65 win over Minnesota Crookston.

UMC will come back from the break Jan. 2 against University of Mary and Jan. 3 against Minot State University.
