UMC Takes First Set But Falls 3-1 to MSU Moorhead in Road Tilt

MOORHEAD, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston volleyball team won the first set Friday but would drop three-straight sets to fall 3-1 (22-25, 25-13, 25-22, 25-21) to Minnesota State University Moorhead. The game was played Friday at the Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minn. The loss is the 10th-straight for the Golden Eagles, who last won Oct. 3 when they defeated MSU Moorhead 3-1 at Lysaker Gymnasium.

The Golden Eagles move to 7-18 (3-14 NSIC) with Friday's loss, while MSU Moorhead improved to 14-11 (7-10 NSIC) with the victory.

UMC was led on the evening by Maggie Perrel (R-So., RS, New Germany, Minn.), who had 11 kills. In addition, Kelci Green (R-So., MH, Anoka, Minn.) added nine kills and hit. 300, while Kassi Green (R-So., RS, Anoka, Minn.) added seven kills. Alyssa Muelken (So., MH, Savage, Minn.) got the start and had a more pronounced role, with five kills and a .214 hitting percentage.

UMC again went with the 6-2 rotation, utilizing two setters. Sierra Trost (Jr., S< ham="" lake,="" minn.)="" led="" the="" golden="" eagles="" with="" 23="" assists,="" while="" kaycie="" hagen="" (so.,="" s/ds,="" savage,="" minn.)="" added="" 16="" assists.="" umc="" would="" hit="" .120="" for="" the="" match="" with="" 44="" kills="" and="" 26="">

Defensively, the Golden Eagles looked to Casey Cashman (Jr., DS/Lib., Ashland, Wis.), who had 14 digs. On the block, Kelci Green would have a career day with 10 block assists and one solo block for the Golden Eagles.

MSU Moorhead would hit .217 for the match with 55 kills and 24 errors. The Dragons looked to Kaitlin VanWinkle's 14 kills and .370 hitting percentage. Carly Masloski would add 13 kills, while Kelsey Hartkopf added 11 and hit .375.

At setter, Casie Baer guided the Dragons with 48 assists.

Defensively, MSU Moorhead looked to 27 digs from libero Amber Krenske, while Baer added 11. On the block, VanWinkle paced the Dragons with four block assists.

UMC and MSU Moorhead would play a tight first set with the Golden Eagles leading 23-22 late. Hitting errors from Abby Wolpern and Masloski would help deliver the set for UMC 25-22 as they took a 1-0 lead.

MSU Moorhead would dominate the third set, winning 25-13 led by six-consecutive points late in the match as the Dragons forced UMC into several hitting errors.

UMC got back to their game in the third, especially late as they would come back from 21-14 to earn five-straight points and make it 21-19. UMC would get within two again at 24-22 but a Perrel attack error would give MSU Moorhead a 25-22 set three victory.

In set four, the two would go toe-to-toe again with UMC coming within 23-21 but kills from Masloski and Wolpern would deliver the fourth set 25-21 and the match 3-0 for the Dragons.

UMC will stay on the road as they face No. 4 Northern State University Sat., Nov. 7 at 4 p.m. at Wachs Arena. The Golden Eagles will look to get back on track against the Wolves.
